By the way, where did paddyman and Collecting Nut disappear to? I haven't seen either of them post a comment in several days. I hope they return soon.
I think if you had it graded it would come back as improperly cleaned. Not saying you cleaned it, but the fine scratches on it would probably get it that designation. The coin actually looked better in the first fuzzy photo.
I don't think those scratches are from cleaning. They look like abrasions caused by contact with something else.
In sandy soil especially, coins rise and fall due to spring and fall freezing and thawing. Enough sand grains interacting with the coin, and your get a surface very much like the OP's. It is an unfortunate but natural process.
I think you got this photo from here. http://m.ebay.com/itm/1921-Standing-Liberty-Quarter-VF-/331633640738?nav=SEARCH
His most recent posted image is definitely a 21, and does not appear to be the same coin as the one in his OP.
Your right Hommer...The coin is the same....just used the pic from my ebay listing... because I thought that pic was clearer but is the same coin from the old picture...as for the scratches in question...the only thing I did for cleaning was just lightly dab it with water and a q-tip...could that of caused it?? I hardly touched it...If so I wonder if this coin is still worth grading?
I actually determined that it was the same coin by all the rim dings and that it had been cleaned since the first photo. The first photo was taken at an angle and it made the date look angled. We all make mistakes, especially in the beginning, and the cleaning of this coin was a big one. I would expect that your rewards will be deeply cut by it. Live and learn. Congrats on the find. Edit to add: There are very few cases where cleaning of a dug coin is beneficial. Almost never a silver coin. Coppers tend to become unidentifiable and in that case the careful removal of oxidation could benefit your reward.
At least in the eBay image, it looks like a 1921. Here is part of the eBay URL - are you implying the coin grades VF? VF-/331633640738?nav=SEARCH
A coin you dig up has to be cleaned in some fashion, or no one will buy it...I don't think a light Q-tipping with plain water hurt the coin a bit; something beyond that made the coin shiny, like a good scrub with your shirt-tail. It's also grossly overpriced at $564. Finally, if you ship the coin to "many other countries," how do you propose to prevent a (possible) total loss? Would you ship to Ukraine? Egypt? Bolivia?
I just graded that off of comparing to other pictures on ebday...I'm no expert...That's why I was wondering if I should just get it graded...
