Any chance any of these coins could be real in this auction? TIA http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...MEDW:IT&viewitem=&item=270113706037&rd=1&rd=1
Wow, I've never seen a fake Pine-Tree shilling mounted like that. Hmmmm, not a bad Ebay idea for getting rid of a bunch of International common coins either.
Some mug paid US$83.89 for all those fakes. The vendor is braindead. If they were real coins, they'd be worth several hundred thousand US$.A real New England coin & a real Massachusetts coin is very sought after, not only by U.S. collectors, but also by the British Commonwealth collectors as well. Aidan.
very true Aidan .. i lived in Massachusetts most of my live before moving to Michigan ... colonial coins and currancy are prized!
I agree with the assesment that the coins are counterfeits! The spotting on the Brasher Doubloon is a dead giveaway that it is not real. However, I disagree on everyones assesment of the value for the coins! I know many Coin Dealers that collect Counterfeit coins for use as examples and for study to learn and teach what to look out for in detecting Counterfeits. These Coin Dealers will pay as much as $20 or more each for nice Counterfeit specimens. Where do you think that the examples for the photographs in the books that are written as reference and teachiing Counterfeit Detection??!! Frank
Well said Frank. I certainly didn't think they were real but thought they looked really cool. I personally would of liked that framed in my office paying about 6 bucks a coin just for the design examples.
Frank,I was mainly looking at the fake New England 1/- & the fake Pine Tree 1/-.I did see the spotting on the fake Brasher Doubloon as well. Aidan.
Not real obviously, but more likely reproductions than counterfeits (distinction being that these aren't meant to pass as real). Still nice looking thing for the wall, though think what it went for is a bit much.
I believe that the set is an accumulation of counterfeted coins and not reproductions but could be wrong! You would expect that Reproductions would have "COPY" stamped somewhere on the Obverse or Reverse and I could not detect this stamp from the pictures. Reproductions produced for a Set for display or examples would normally come in a specially made display case with a hole or slot for each coin and with labelling of what the coin represents. They would not be housed in a display case that appears to be homemade or done cheaply by a local Framing Company unless the original display case suffered unrepairable damage. Frank
Aidan, I understand what you are saying and I would not pay that kind of money for the coins as well! I didn't mean to step on your posting and what you said! Frank
There is a fake brasher doubloon in there as well, and the very poor quality of the lettering really shows them up to be recent oriental imitations.
I hope the person who won the auction doesn't take the coins out of the frame and tries to sell them as AUTHENTIC coins!! One never knows what evil lurks in the minds of E-Bay sellers!! swick
