Scotty,I bet you pulled that 2001D $1/2 out of the roll. Are you going to actually try to spend the rest of the coins? You will probably get some very blank looks from some people. Aidan.
Aidan... yep, the 2001-D was in the same roll. At restaurants I always try to leave tips in the form of unusual coins or bills (i.e., Half Dollars, Two-Dollar Bills, Golden Dollars, etc.). It usually sparks an interest. One time, I left a Morgan Dollar as a tip and you would have thought I'd given the waiter a fortune! He was so excited he was practically jumping up and down. Of course, that was back when you could buy a cull Morgan for around $8.00. Maybe when silver drops again I'll buy some more Morgans just for that purpose...
Nice find. I keep on telling myself I've got to get some rolls of 1/2 dollars some day. They may be hard to find but I'll keep on trying. Hey, It can't hurt to look.!!!
The condition that it's in would classify it as junk silver... Value would be around $4.00 to $4.50 or so......
I don't think it is the accented hair variety, but might still be a proof. Look at the hair real closely, and the "I". I can't tell by the hair, but the I is basically what I think doesn't make it an accented hair. But still an awesome find. :thumb: Phoenix
2001 saw limited circulation, but it was circulated. When you go back, buy every roll they have. In searching thousands of rolls, I've found the silver comes in bunches. Rarely do I get the occasional one here and there. That said, if you found silver in one roll, there's a good chance that the whole box was a good box. Buy the rest of it and you just might be amazed at what you find. Good Luck.
Scotty, you're mad leaving a Morgan $1 as a tip.The silver value alone is worth more than that.I bet you will leave either an extremely worn or battered one,or one that has a hole in it the next time you're in a restaurant or a diner. Aidan.
Why? The silver value is about $7-$8 each....and most of the time the tips are larger than that. Speedy
Tipping is actually strongly discouraged over here in New Zealand, which is why we don't have any familiarity with the practice. Aidan.
OK, I have to ask. My soon-to-be 11-year-old and I are still on cents. Any strategies you high-rollers on the 50-cent machines have to minimize our chances of going home in common clad? Let me start with the banks. Any particular kinds of banks better than others? I'd suppose the older and more-established, the better, right? So, what do I say, "Go into your vault and shake off the dust from those brown wrappers and put them in a box and I'll be back tomorrow and pick them up?" And do I even tell these banks I'm roll-searching? And, what about the account...you have to bank there, right? So that kinda limits you, now? And then there's that issue of returns. You don't give your discards back to the same bank, do you? But what bank will regularly throw halves into their Coinstar machines for you unless you're a customer there? So now you have two accounts, in two different banks? Some of you appear to be real pros at this. So what about it, is it pot luck? I'm sure it wouldn't hurt to be at my smooch-em-up best. But just how does a nice guy like me go about this? Any tips/pointers, this is your big opportunity ...thanks!
i dont do roll searching very often. But for my currency searching, i belong to 4 banks. i buy from 2, and sell to 2. I buy from bank A, and only sell to bank B. If i buy from bank C, i only sell to Bank D. This helps me keep track of where i need to go next. I was forced to open an account at each bank, but i opened a checking account at each, and therefore i dont have a minimum balance. Also, if i do roll search, 2 of my banks (the 2 i sell to) have free coin counting machines in the lobby (the 2 i buy from also have them, but they are accesible only to employees - but still free for the customers). I would think that since all banks get coins and currency from the same source - the reserves- that they all run the same chance of getting ' the good stuff'
Hey, that's a great little system you got there, Daggarjon, thanks! OK...what about the rest of you seasoned campaigners?
I would first go to your bank with your 11 y/o at your side and buy every half dollar they have. I would also ask if they could order a box for you. I would then make a pass at every bank in your area and pickup every roll. When you pickup the box from your bank I would ask if they want the returns in a bag or rolled. They might even give you a bag to put the coins in. I would then dump at your current bank. The trick is to build a relationship with the lead teller or vault teller. I would even have your 11 y/o show a few coins to the teller. Most tellers like to help kids out on their collection. Best of luck, 65GT350
Thanks GT! I'm taking notes on you guys. That's some fine automobile, too. OK...step right up...who's next?
I only ask for rolls and if there’s no silver I only have $10-$20 to get rid of, which I do by spending a dollar or two At a time. I know the chances of finding silver are greater with the $500 box but that's a bit too much of a commitment for me. One of the posters recently reported searching an entire box and finding not one silver coin, I would be #%%@**ed if that happened. Last week I snagged 3 rolls from the B of A and as luck would have it all 3 rolls were silver, you never know It’s total hit and miss. good luck
