I bought one roll of half dollars from the bank today and when I opened it, this beauty was staring right back at me. You could have heard my heart pounding a mile away. Alas, it was the only silver-content half in the roll, but I still made out like a bandit... I'm fairly certain it's a Proof. It's smudged and even though it's difficult to tell from the picture, there's quite a bit of mirror-like reflectivity to the coin. The gold tone on the picture is due to the lighting - in person it's a lovely shade of silver!!
Ben,where was the Proof 1964 $1/2 struck then,if there weren't any struck at the San Francisco Mint? Aidan.
Well, I just asked for one roll to sort of "test the waters" at my bank. I've heard horror stories about bank tellers who hate roll-searchers. This seems especially true about people who search rolls of halves, since tellers seldom keep these rolls at their window; they have to go the vault to retrieve them. The bank teller was very pleasant, however, she asked if I had an account there. I'll be back for more rolls this week and I'll let all of you know if I find more.
I didn't notice it during my initial search of the roll, but there was also a 2001-D included. I thought that was kind of interesting....
Wow, awesome! She is a beauty. Looks like a proof to me as well, but hard to tell by the lighting. Nice find! Phoenix
Hmmm... the first thing I thought when I saw it was "accented hair". Nice work ! Recently, I was reading about the "accented hair" somewhere. Maybe here. Anyway, apparently Jackie didn't like it, so the Mint changed the dies. Personally, I prefer the "accented hair" variety.
I also thought it could be an Accented Hair variety, but upon closer inspection I'm convinced that it isn't. Besides, it's not missing the bottom left serif on the "I" in LIBERTY that Accented Hair varieties have. I love "finds" like this - it generates a lot of interest and discussion!
I know this guy who has been collecting for a long time. About every 6 months he takes all of his change and rolls it up. In the Cent roll he always includes a wheat or IHC, The nickels always has either a buffalo or War, The dimes and quarters always have a silver included. Maybe just maybe he put some silver halves out there as well. I hear tell the last roll of cents that went back had a rather nice Lincoln in it. Good luck and keep searching. They are out there.
