Mine was a combination of things...

I've always had an interest in coin collecting as far back as I can remember, but never knew Coin shops, Coin magazines or websites related existed... I never thought to look...

I assumed that all collecting was done thought just getting lucky and finding coins in circulation... Which is part of the fun, I'll admit...

Second, I've always had a thing for (shiney stuff) Gold and Silver... One day a few years ago, something really peaked my interest and looking at sites that had Silver bullion, I started seeing more about Morgans and old Silver coins (the sparks are starting)....

Then the whole "State Quarter" thing sparked a bit of interest...

Then enjoying on several occasions spending several hours with my daughter sorting though wheaties and Foreign coins, bought in bulk... We really enjoyed it and still do it every so often... I spike the lot she is going to sort with a few canadians I find here and there...

By this time my interest is really growing, I'm at the book store looking at book, searching Ebay, looking at sites, reading the phone book trying to find some nice local coin store, etc.. etc...

Then I find this place... Its Over!!!!

    I love it...

It originally started collecting coins when I was a kid. My father bought some Whitman folders and showed me how to fill them. I was fascinated by the dates and mintmarks and my interest grew from there. Most of my coins were in jars and nothing was organized. Sometimes when I got bored, I would flip through my collection of foreign coins and cents and look at the different designs, dates, etc.

There was a big lapse throughout my teenage years. I spent what coins I could on typical teenager stuff. Anything that could be rolled up was fair game and I had no interest in the numismatic value.

Some years later, my grandfather left me a few coins. At the time my father had a motorcycle and all sorts of chrome polish lying around. I had the bright idea to polish all the silver coins that were left to me including a 1921 high relief Peace Dollar! Then I stored them in zip-lock baggies and I had them all shoved into a Pringles can.

A few years later I was a cashier and found an interesting coin in change that I couldn't identify. I ended up searching for it on the internet until I found this forum. I had my answer within a few hours and decided to hang out. Eventually I learned a great deal about coins and coin collecting from the forums and was able to put together a pretty decent collection for myself. I also learned how to properly handle and store coins. I still can't believe how stupid I was about spending money into circulation and polishing coins.

We kept a sears catalogue in the outhouse. I am not trying to be disrespectful to sears but paper was expensive. That was common practice back then. Once you read a page you know what happens next.

Never did the outhouse experience except on vacation but if I did thank GOD I didn't use the coin collecting kit page!
