    Hello all,

I just found this coin in an old box and it is really big and heavy.

    Front side-

Has the date 1782 on the left side of a pyramid and on the right says 1882.

    Bottom of the pyramid says M D C C L X X V I and under that says novus ordo seclorum.

    Here are the pictures:

    Back:

It has an eagle with a shield in the center of it and its claws are holding leafs/branch and what looks to be arrows its mouth is holding a flag that says E plurieus unum with stars and clouds above its head.

    Real size of coin:

Does any one know what this coin is and what its value might be?

    Thanks you so much,

    Steve

It's an American commemorative medal commemorating the Centenary of something (possibly the Articles of Confederation?).The pyramid & eye symbol reminds me of the back of the US$1 banknote.

    1) Not a coin;
    2) it is a medal.
    3) 100th anniversary of the Constitution, I believe.
    4) I believe that it is supposed to be the great seal of the US.

edit: Darn Aiden: ya beat me..

    also:

"Novus Ordo Seclorum" was the motto suggested in 1782 by Charles Thomson, the Founding Father chosen by the Continental Congress to come up with the final design for the Great Seal of the United States.

He put the motto at the bottom of the reverse side where its meaning ties into the imagery above it: the unfinished pyramid with the date MDCCLXXVI (1776).

Thomson did not provide an exact translation of the motto, but he explained its symbolism: Novus Ordo Seclorum signifies "the beginning of the new American Æra," which commences from 1776.

I can confirm what it is commemorating - the Centenary of the Great Seal of the U.S.A..The Constitution wasn't adopted in 1782,but 1787.

You are right about the Freemasonic origin.I've heard all sorts of stories regarding the symbolism, including the creation of a 'New World Order',which,to me,just doesn't make sense.

    Aidan.
