Well, just wanted to share that today I received by "new" Dansco 7070 and have oficially begun the quest. I started off picking up a late date but choice Buffalo Nickel and a AU58 1921 high relief Peace. Onward to victory!!! (whereas victory is defined by my wife not killing me as I spend the next several years scouring local shops and internet auctions working on this)
Yes, "out bid" is the most likely scenario. I'm glad I started my Dansco journey with presidential dollars first, because there's a real art to getting coins in there and getting that plastic back in. So Mint proof sets are nice and easy to open ... next impending disaster will be breaking slabs. God help me ... think I better start with like some cheap coin that never should have been slabbed. My first go around with opening a proof set unfortunately left poor Ulysses S. Grant with a nice scratch to keep him company for the next 50 years. Grant of all people ... why couldn't it have been like Taft!?
As far as I know, there's no new edition, and I don't know how to acquire one without spending $80+ on it. It's a nice album in terms of the types it contains, and very fun to put together as a set, but I don't like cardboard albums with slides.
The search to complete a type set (7070 or otherwise) is a pleasurable experience. I personally am at the "dream" level. It's going to take a BIG lottery win for me to complete it.
Here's other options for US Type albums: http://www.valleycoin.com/product_info.php?products_id=35408&osCsid=562602c11ad3da0d70179064b5f0519c http://www.valleycoin.com/product_info.php?products_id=35407
It will be fun! While I had some old folders from years ago, the first Dansco I bought was the 7070, because, I realized I didn't know nothing about USA historical coins. Mine is not a registry set, but, oh, I learned so much about the old ones. And, I also got to actually touch them too! Since then I have moved on to sets I like and get better coins plus upgrade the ole 7070 entries every now and then. It is a great way to learn, if that's what you want to do.
Interesting! If it is, then Dansco has fallen behind or doesn't care. Neato, let's see what happens next.
NGC has several type sets available. They have one that is super-intense, and they have one that is modeled off the 7070. For example, mine is here: http://coins.www.collectors-society.com/registry/coins/SetListing.aspx?PeopleSetID=98228&Ranking=all Dansco makes a wide range of different albums, and each album has a product number. Their album "7070" is the basic US Type Set. Many collectors have accepted this as the standard type set, and will refer to it in short hand as the 7070.
I wonder why Dansco has not came out with a new version of the 7070? I understand they quit making the old one. A new version would be a big hit. Are they actually still in business?
Yes, they are still in business. The issue is that it is a family company (operations themselves actually run by members of the family) that doesn't do well with change, evidently. I've heard stories from coin retailers about putting an order in for binders and pages, and 18 months later(!) it gets filled. The company take the entire month of December off for Christmas. They better be careful: There certainly is somebody ELSE out there who could invest in a few hydraulic punch-presses to knock out differing-sized holes in scrapbook chipboard covered with leatherette and place them in binders with hot-foil stamped gold lettering on them. The investment level might possibly be less than $2 million. The reason why Dansco practically corners the market with a lot of coin album products is still interesting to me. I personally like their products, in any case.
It is kinda ova shame that Dansco does not realize their appeal and make products that would sell, eh?
