According to About.com, the number of slabbed missing edge lettering Washington dollar errors has reached 50,000. The article goes on to say:
I thinkt here is more money to be made if you had perfect edge lettering then misisng edge lettering. JMO
The US Mint has minted 340,360,000 Washington Dollars. So even if there are 300,000 plain edge errors (its probably lower than that) then that still leaves 340,060,000 coins with the edge minted correctly.
slabbed population = 50k, minus the 20k that were resubmited, so the slabbed pop reports should be about 30k =D
I was surfing the T.V. yesterday, and on one of the shopping networks they were selling a PCGS slabbed Washington dollar double error - Struck through grease and missing edge lettering. It was going for $400. I think the appeal of the errors sometimes mean more than the rarity of them in terms of market value, don't you? At least, I think that perhaps the appeal will influence the value in the short term, but rarity may be the more consistent determining factor in the long run....What is your perception?
I wonder how many of these slabbies are fakes. The last I heard, the U.S. Mint estimated there were only 60,000 such "error coins" in existence. So 5/6ths have already been slabbed? I dunno, Sherlock. I'll bet they've been slabbing counterfeits for quite some time, now, they just don't have the means--nor the inclination, for that matter--to know it.
Oh, if only they had left washington off the coin instead of the edge. The coins would be so much more pretty !
What would their checkpoints be, would you have any idea? What criteria, if the tolerances are superfluous, except in so far as distinguishing the most obvious fakes?
http://www.gwdollar.com/ Read this article it will shed a lot of information as to what is a fake! That is why I bought 4 "Godless" NGC Certified errors and not "un-slabbed" Godless errors.
FYI, the Sac Dollar edge has these vertical lines, too, in spots. But, that aside, you want to buy 4 of these based on what some anonymous source says on the Internet, that's your business.
So, the Sac. has the same vertical lines! What is that supposed to mean? The Sac. doesn't have edge lettering either. Did you even read the link I posted? I didn't claim that the link was the ONLY way to prove if a coin is a fake or real. I thought we were talking about Pres. Dollars. And yes, I will base my purchases on ALL the information I can get no matter who posts such information then I can take it all into consideration and make the best choice I can with ALL the information I have gathered. Then I can purchase a slabbed coin and feel reassured that I purchased a real "Godless" error and not a fake. The only reason I posted that link was to respond to your question as to what constitutes a fake or a real coin. You can take from that link and any other link what you will. I was just responding to your post in a respectful manner. I don't need you lecturing me on my coin purchases by the way. If you don't want an informative reply (link) don't ask the question.
The reference to the absence of "top to bottom" lines on Sac Dollar edges was made in your link (http://www.gwdollar.com/), and it's incorrect, check your Sac Dollars on that. Thank you for the link, it was very informative. But don't sit there and lash out at me for pointing out an erroneous statement, therein, nor for expressing concern over the fact that the information is being provided to us by an anonymous source. And buy 4 more of these, for all I care. Again, that's your business...
