I have been picking up a few $2 1/2 coins in older holders lately.. and ran across this. I have not seen any in a holder like this. Does anyone have any info on how long they had these, and when it would have been graded? I do not have it in hand yet, but it looks nicer than AU58 to me. I will keep it in this holder though.
These slabs are considered rare... and not a bad coin either From sampleslabs.com, "ANACS was the first company to authenticate coins as a professional business. It was owned by the American Numismatic Association, from which it gets its name. In the early years they issued certificates that came with a picture of the coin. In 1989 they began using slabs as a means of guaranteeing grade. The labels were white with blue “Official ANA Grade” under printing until 1990 when ANACS was sold to Amos Press." I have one of these original ANACS slabs in my collection as well. They're pretty neat.
Awesome! So this is one of the first slabbed coins? I knew I had never seen another like this, so figured it was pretty rare. I wonder how many are left?
I really like the ANA slabs. I have an 1883-O Morgan with some really nice toning in one of those slabs. It's graded MS-63 and by today's standards I would guess it would go another grade higher at the minimum. But, I don't want to crack the holder. I wish CAC would sticker these older slabs. But I can see how they could get into thin ice with the newer ANACS grading. Although, they would just not have to put stickers on many of the newer slabs. I personally would love to see an old ANA slab with a Gold Bean on it. Beats the old rattler holders any day of the week. At least the coins in the ANA holders are not loose.
Nice. The old style holder adds to the beauty of the coin. I would say it was graded correctly, given the wear on the bonnet. With today's loose standards it may make MS-60.
ANACS began using the slabs around Nov 1989. ANACS was sold to Amos Pres in Feb of 1990 and the slab underprinting and holograms style was probably changed by April 1990. So these would have been used for some four to six months.
It came in today! Looks very nice, I must say. I also received an OGH pcgs MS61 today too! Here they are..
TS4400 was probably slabbed late 1988 or early 1989. The best evidence is several coins with similar s/n TS47ss and TS48ss that are 1988 or 1989 minted and so could NOT have been earlier... TS4753 (database lookup 18xxxx, here: http://anacs.net/anacs_web_reports/serialsearch.php?serial=184753), TS4754, TS4755 and TS4756 are an 1988 gold set. And TS4762 through TS4766 are an 1989S mint set...
