Interesting Coins

Man, it's too quiet around here. We need Steve to just start any ole thread about any ole topic like he always does when it gets too quiet. So, since he put me in charge in his absence, I will start this thread and hope it generates some activity.

Looking through my catalog, I thought I would post a coin I think is interesting, but that we haven't talked much about. This coin was struck not long after the death of Caesar, but before Octavian took the mantle of Augustus. It's not the best coin in my corral, but it is interesting in style.

He's in Vancouver visiting his elderly father. I think he is due back this weekend. I will be leaving tomorrow evening for Poland, so someone else has to step up and be in charge. Any takers?

Are you going to any coin shops while in Poland? Is your trip there strictly professional?

 

Going to see my son who is stationed there with NATO. Last time I was there, I couldn't find any coin shops dealing in Ancients. Perhaps in Warsaw, but I will not be anywhere near there.

Hmm, let's see... we could start a "post your animals by alphabet" thread. Doing so during Steve's absence would be cruel though. I'll wait until he returns.

I wonder how many letters he alone could cover?

Asian elephant, Antelope, Bird, Bear, Bee, Crocodile, Cuttlefish, Deer, Donkey, Dolphin... etc.

 

I'll bet he can't cover more than 26.

This might prove interesting. I don't think I've ever posted coins of all the barbarian kingdoms in my collection in one post. I'll choose one coin to represent each.

It was the first time in eight centuries that Rome was attacked and successfully plundered by an enemy force, in what was one of the key events of the decline and fall of the Western Roman Empire.

Tomorrow will mark the 1658th anniversary of the Battle of Argentoratum(Strasbourg), where Caesar Julian II defeated the Alamanni who greatly outnumbered him. This coin is an indirect result of that victory.
