    Good day everyone.

I am trying to determine the difference between the near beads and far beads on a 1983 penny. Ya, I know - one is closer and one is farther. Is there a way to tell other than holding 2 pennies together and guessing?

    Much thanks,

    E!

Anyhow, judging by the pictures in the Charlton Standard Catalog of Canadian Coins, the near beads are slightly more than one bead diameter away from the raised border, and the far beads are more than two diameters away.

Get a coin which you know is near/far and compare.

I didn't even know there was any varieties with those Canadian 1c. coins from the 1980's.Putting 2 of the coins together to compare is the best way to compare the beading just inside the rim.

1965 and 1985 have the blunt and pointed 5 varieties. I didn't realize there were near/far beads for 1983. You learn something new every day.

Perhaps, they're listed in Charlton.I'm not sure about in Krause though,as I haven't looked at the Krause catalogues at work since Friday last week.

If not, it would have been pretty difficult for me to describe the pictures they published.
The newest 20th Century edition doesn't mention them.

Roy,there's a lot of varieties in Canadian coinage that have been listed in Charlton for many years, but have never been listed in Krause.Perhaps someone should do a listing of all the Charlton listed varieties & report them for listing in Krause.

The two varieties for 1983 are listed in the 2007 Charlton catalog, but there is no difference in value in all grades.

I just checked my 2007 Brookstone catalog and the 1983 far beads are higher in value. Brookstone in general tends to have higher values then Charlton.
