So I'm looking at a shrink-packed roll of cents before I open it and I notice this little bugger and it's reeded and it's 19mm and I'm thinking whoa this is some kind of wrong-planchet error! Not that I have anything against coinage from India, but, well, you know how it is. So, don't tell me, this is the rare 1988 silver India quarter-eagle, right? Metallic composition? I already know it's the diameter of a cent. Hey thanks!
That's a very nice find - an Indian 25 Paise.I have a few of these,& other 25 Paise coins in my collection,as India is a British Commonwealth member state. Aidan.
I can't tell from your pictures whether it is KM#49.1 or 49.3. Either way it's cu-ni, minted at Hyderabad (the star under the date is the mintmark). Type 1 is described in the 34th Ed. Krause 20th Century as having whiskers on the lion, while Type III does not. (Type II was not minted after 1982.) 1988 mintage of Type I was 303,252,000. The listed value is 60¢ VF, 90¢ XF, and $1.50 Unc. Mintage of Type III is not shown. It's values are 45¢, $1, and $1.75. Bottom line - kwichurbellyakin! :thumb:
Oh this was a blast finding this--especially this way! Hey Aidan, would you happen to know, this would be tantamount to an India quarter?
Roy, it ain't bellyackin', I thought I struck it! My hands were shakin' when I ripped open this roll! PS: Mucho thanks for the detail, appreciate it.
exactly.. i had the same challenge looking into gettign a hold of Egyptian notes. I heard the term for their coin notes, and the term Pounds. It took some effort ... but i came to the same conclusion as you
To be honest, I don't know anything about foreign coinage other than Canadadian coins. Nice find though!
OMG not another ... so what is Milliemes?? I need to get myself educated better if i am to be buying them
There are 10 Milliemes in 1 Piastre,& 100 Piastres in 1 Egyptian Pound.Sudan also has a currency called the Pound, which recently replaced the Dinar in circulation. Aidan.
so the milliemes would be like 1/10th of a cent? i did find this site which gives an overview of the Egyptian monetary history .. with pics
Yep.A similar situation applies in Malta, which has 10 Mils in 1 Cent,& 100 Cents in 1 Maltese Pound. Aidan.
Actually, there is no significant difference in the two sub-types from this mint. They can be identified by looking at the rim. There is a 'Flat Rim' and a 'Sharp Rim' sub-types for this date and mint. The 'Flat Rim' coins were struck on locally prepared planchet while the 'Sharp Rim' coins were struck on planchets imported from Seol, South Korea. The one posted above looks like a 'Flat Rim' coin. Regards, Ballabh Garg
Just FYI, this one's "reeded" along the edge. That's why when I saw it sandwiched between the other cents in the roll I thought it might be a dime, until I realized its diameter.
That is for Egyptian issues starting 1916. Before that, there was the 4, 10, and 20 Para, 1/40, 1/20, 1/10, 2/10, 5/10 and 1 Qirsh (40 para = 1 qirsh), 2, 2 1/2, 5, and 10 Qirsh.
