Has anyone considered having a topic here for selling coins ?
If we could do it then we'd bypass Ebay with its charges and buy/sell directly to the correspondents here.

An ACID-compiant transactional system needed for bidding, inventory, ainancials, etc. takes some architecture and there is always maintenance. Also, the current code generation tools are written on a stack most developers don't know, so maintenance is something to keep in mind.

We have the forums; if it's a subsystem I'd be willing to help when I can. We;d probably also need a rating system but that is not very difficult.

I can't seem to edit my post. Sorry for the typos / double reply.

Was this referring to a seperate site, or part of this one?

I just ask because this has been in the back of mind for some time. You'd need a businaess model but I have some things in mind.

There's also the issue of sheer numbers. You don't want an auction on a site with only a few people.

I'll bite. What would the topic do for selling that the "For Sale" location doesn't?

I do a lot of business on Ebay with coins and a whole bunch more. I'm not a big fan of the fees (Ebay & Paypal) but where else can you go that has the selection available and an easy process? Considering all of the possibilities, I agree with you that it is a cost of doing business.

If you try to sell at some auction house you would have to pay at least 10% commission. Or the buyer has to pay a buyers premium and that will reduce your realized price.
Or you can try to sell your stuff at a garage sale, not many people are looking for high grade coins there. One could could rent space all at a flea market and spend all day and not sell anything.
An other option is to try to sell on a forum like here. But, how are you going to know who you are dealing with. And what is your options if the deal goes south.

Like Rick on "Pawn Stars" says you can rent a building and hire some employees and pay taxes then sell it yourself.

I think one has to decide if you are a dealer or a collector. As a collector I have to be very picky what I buy because I am going to have it for a very long time. But as a dealer I am going to have expect some expenses.

I think Ebay and Paypal is still a good bargain.

So lets enjoy our hobby for what it is "a hobby" and quit buying junk just to the sake of buying.

  8. It seems like a large portion of the silver coins for sale on e- bay have been dipped or cleaned in some way. They just have a tendency to look a little too clean and polished !
Any other thoughts on this from other members ?

Sure... there certainly are a lot of cleaned and polished coins offered there, and for good reason; eBay offers a market and potential prices for such coins rarely found elsewhere. This isn't to say there are not many fine no problem coins, both slabbed and raw, available as well, but is a simple reality of the venue.

  10. It's OK with me if they want to sell their wares this way, but what I don't like is that they sucker people (especially new collectors) into buying these perfect looking beauties like they are the real article, and failing to mention that the coin has been altered or enhanced by chemicals .
To me this is a case of good old fashioned false advertising to make a fast buck .

    Sure.

Good coins at good prices sell quickly. If they're listed Buy It Now, they get snatched up immediately; if they're auctioned, they sell the first time around.

Bad coins don't sell. So, they stay up for the entire duration of the listing, and are then relisted again and again and again.

Given this, it's not surprising that you see a lot of bad coins.

For some dealers that have their own websites, Ebay serves as a dumping ground for cleaned and damaged coins. Most of them have found a permanent home -- they attract almost no bids,

The vast majority of the junk silver 90% you find on Ebay is overpriced. Anyone else notice that?

So much for 90% being a cheap way to buy silver.

If you want to buy silver as an investment, buy American Silver Eagle bullion coins from a reputable dealer. Same with gold - Eagle bullion coins. Don't get them graded and don't pay idiotic prices for graded bullion.

Or buy the bullion straight from a reputable dealer. Or buy an exchange traded fund through your friendly stock broker or investment adviser.

I pick up a lot of world silver for melt or less. Harder to sell but I like it. I picked up an old english crown for $5 under melt because it was in the wrong section.

  19. How true this is . As I mentioned in one of my other posts, the real problem to me is that we say that we welcome new collectors into our hobby ect., but when they purchase those bright silver coins on E-bay, they are not receiving a true description of it's genuine condition.
Especially from certain dealers that are marketing their coins as being something they are not.
Particularly when they alter the surfaces with chemicals to make them appear much differently.
I don't think this practice is good for our hobbies image, or to bring new collectors into the market place, when they want to buy merchandise from private people and professional dealers.

  20. I have been selling on eBay for about 3 years I have bought my own, consigned for clients and offer free shipping!

I have recently switched to store mode and cut my fees extremely. As always some items fall through to buyers that get a good value on misdescribed or low photos to amateur sellers. I have bought and resold items for or from people and resold on eBay and still turned a profit.

I have since turned my silver hoarding into a profitable hobby and consult for new clients as I sell off the bottom 90% if my estate buys.

And for the selling fees imposed by sellers you can easily sort those out and by from only reputable sellers!

As for ebays fees and policies eBay if way more fair to the buyer then the seller sometimes making the sales outlet look scary to the seller!

    My 2 cents
    Thank you!
