Hi, this is was in my dad's coin book collection. I noticed the bright shiny obverse so I removed it and found a strange fill type substance with a hole pattern on the reverse. Also, close up looks like clusters of copper mixed in?

Just curious if anyone knows what would cause this type of error? I assume this type of error is too distracting to have value?
    Thank you!!

Sorry. Not an error coin. It was plated and glued on to something.

Post Mint Damage. At least this isn't on a tough date.

My first thoughts were similar. I thought the coin had sat in something and hardened over a long period when my dad was a boy, but then I got a stronger loupe and it looks like cluster pieces of the pink toned copper mixed in with black stuff underneath. It's strange but fun and hard to totally capture in a photo :)

It's a common date coin so no real harm can be done, unless you prefer to keep it as it was found, by trying to soak it to remove that black stuff. Do you think it's tar and is it possible that your dad found it in a parking lot, pick4ed it up and filled a hole?

Not sure? The black stuff has round holes punch-liked throughout it. I just think it's interesting to speculate mostly :) I will put it back in the book ...
