Hey Guys A few years ago my dad bought a box (LOT) of Morgan and Peace dollars from an older collector who was selling his whole collection. There were a few hundred silver dollars total. The other day I was re-flipping some for him and found this one. What do ya'll think?? Speedy
Must be a pre- Washington Washington Dollar error. Probably worth a gazillion dollars or so. On the other hand maybe it was going to be made into Jewelry? clembo
At first glance I thought it was an escapee from a slot machine - but is that a secondary rim ? Almost like something is wrapped around the coin ?
My first thought too, but the ones I've seen haven't been that neatly smoothed out. I have to agree with hamman88's objection to the jewelry theory too. Soooooooo -
Well if the collar was not reeded there would be more examples of this error, and if the collar did not deploy it would of been a broadstrike. I say post-mint.
I've checked but I don't see anything wrapped around it and the rim seems fine. The whole coin looks normal untill you view the rim. I've thought about every kind of error that happens on the rim---but Broadstrike is the only one I can think of that doesn't show any reading and this one isn't broadstruck. Jewelry could be right but what kind? and why did they make the rim smoothed out? Speedy
I don't have a really good way to do that---my Bro-in-law has something that will do it and I'll try that ASAP. That being said----I tried to do it and it comes right at 1 1/2 inch....the same as other silver dollars I have. Bone Could be....but I've never seen one this good. Speedy
Could this have happened in the REMOVAL from jewelry? I have a quarter eagle that spent a number of decades in a piece of jewelry, and the rims are not as good as on other coins. Just a guess. Could be wrong.
