The dot you are referencing is about 1/5 the size of the dot that is on my coin, you can actually see the one on my coin with your naked eye, at least I can without my eyeglasses even. As soon as a camera arrives, (I have been assured that it is on the way) I'll take some more pictures and post them. In the meantime, please play nice and try not to hurt each other.

Thanks for all the input, I promise, in just a little while there will be more pictures! :)

Yes, this can happen, but what he said was that something fell on a planchet and impacted the die upon striking it. This can't happen because there is no planchet as hard or harder than the die steel. The object would be driven into the planchet.

the coin still being in the plastic with it's reflective properties and blemishes isn't helping matters any...ugh :(

I see the dot. The way the light and shadow fall, it looks incuse, unlike the OPs coin, where the dot is raised.

Well, OK. Are there any experts here who might give this a shot and let me know if there is a collector's market for such coins? If there isn't, I think I might start my own collection but I will look for "dots" in the open fields of a coin, where they are most likely to stand out, and depending on how the search goes, I may confine the search to Proof Sets only.

Thanks for everyone's input. Since I've never encountered this before in a coin that was still in the Mint packaging, I was rather taken aback when I first saw it, but if it isn't that rare of an occurrence, then I shouldn't have too much trouble finding a few more, hopefully different dates and mint marks if I happen upon some outside of Proof Sets. Again, Thanks! And if anyone has anything else to add, please feel free, I welcome everyone's comments. :)

If there was something that tiny stuck between the die and the planchet, it would be smashed into the coin. Can't see it harming the die. Something really hard must have hit the die or maybe it was dropped.
It's also possible that there was something between the hub and the die when the die was made. The die would have been soft at that point so several things could have dented it. If this were the case, there should be a lot of the same coin with the same defect.
It's also possible that a mint worker added the dent for the fun of it.

I seriously doubt that any premium would be associated with such a minor anomaly.

“those ebayers are something else”...This coming from someone who wants to collect die gouge dots of proof coins. I have had many great experiences on EBay, both buying and selling Kennedy varieties. I really get tired of reading the many negative EBay comments from people who post on this forum!

My statement is in no way an indictment of all buyers or sellers on eBay, but have you seen some of the stuff that sells on eBay?

One well known example is the spike chin half cent. But I will agree that for a foreign object strike-through to do damage to the die it has to be large enough that the other die provides the backing to force the hard object into the die. That wouldn't be true of something this small.

One thing that could cause this would be a flaw in the chrome plating on the die. This is often what causes the "dots" seen on Canadian coins.

It would be nice to know what post was removed, who removed it, and why. Simply stating that it is against the rules, but with no more explanation does nothing to educate me.
