what year nickles have silver in them??

Also, what is the EXACT silver content in each of the silver nickels?

Furthermore, why keep pre-1960 nickels when searching...

Look for 1942-1945. Although there are some 1942 -non-silver coins. Look for a big mintmark above monticello on the reverse. The war nickels are approx 35% silver, 56% copper and 9% manganese if my memory serves me correct. They weigh 5 grams and current melt current value is about .75 -.80 depending on spot price. I'm running late for work but I'll post pics tonight of war nickels and the mintmark. DAK

    The 1942-P & D Type II's, 1943-P,D & S, 1944-P,D & S and 1945-P,D & S!

There were quite a few Nickel Varieties/Errors produced before 1960 (i.e. Doubled Dies, RPM's and OMM's) and most are worth holding onto for a thorough check for the Varieties and/or Errors.

Just bought a well ciruclated 11pc war nickel set. paid $9.50 for the entire set . To quote Whitney Houston I believe "I don't know why I like it , I just do." thought they were cool when I was a kid and now think they are cool as an old grouch .

ok so I searched through about 100 bucks worth of nickels and found/saved the following...

    6 dimes~!!!!

    8 silver 1942-1945 nickels
    2 1942 NON- silver nickels
9 more from the 40'2 various dates
    6 from the late 30's
    26 from the 50's
and about 4 total rolls from the 60's

Im not really a nickel searcher but thought I would see what happens with 100 bucks worth..

Awesome! That is a good day of nickel searching by anyones standards! I'm even feeling a bit jeolous!! I have a box of about $50 I've been saving of 1938-1960 nickels I'm going to search today for RPM's and hopefully I'll get as lucky as you!!

The war nickels for 1942 with silver are P & S only.

    Bruce,

You are right and I goofed up! The 1942 War Nickels were only produced at Philadelphia and San Francisco but you know, I could have sworn that I had a 1942-D Type II. Well, if I did have one (which I am not sure), I sold it and lost out on a rare coin worth a pretty good bundle!

I really need to pay better attention to some of my coins!
