House Bill 5012 has made it to the first important committee. The bill started Sept. 7th by REP. Ray Lahood of Ill. is asking for Four Different reverse designs and the composition of the Cent to return to Copper as was the original Lincoln Cent in 1909. While the Obverse would stay the same, it is looking possible that this 200th anniversary could happen. The bill will not be voted on until after the elections.
I hope the bill passes. I would love to see some changes in our coinage. It would definitely spice up the hobby
As would I. Unfortunately, I don't see any changes taking place which will displace all these dead presidents. We may get new reverses, we may get revised portraits, but we've backed ourselves into a political corner by using these portraits of real people on coins. Now it's a slap in the face and a dishonor to remove them, so we're stuck with them.
You're only stuck with it only IF you decide to accept what the politicians are telling you you can have. If you feel strongly enough about change, make it happen. Find others that feel the same way and start applying pressure. I for one hope the bill fails. It's a unecessary coin and a tired design. I find more of them on the ground in high school parking lots than in circulation. If the coin is so important, why do so many folks leave their the ones they receive in change in the little cups by the registers?
Well as one who has dealt with several politicians over the whole coinage idea, I can tell you from firsthand knowledge that most on the hill do not have the nerve to propose a removal of any of the sitting presidential figures represented currently. This is why the presidential dollar is currently being debated. This is one reason that the Reagan committee is not pushing the Dime issue. Until we as a group direct our efforts in one loud voice, we will be stuck with what we get. Now as far as change goes, I just want something different. I would love to see better designs, but would settle for bad designs if they would change within a lifetime.
