I inherited a coin collection a while back and I'm still working on separating out what I'd like to keep and what I'd like to get rid of. In the collection are over 100 rolls of 1962-1969 pennies, all from the Denver mint. Every roll is marked "UNC", and based on opening and inspecting a few rolls, I'd say that's probably correct.
They made like 2 billion per year, so my gut says that uncirculated or not they're just not collectible. Do you think it's worth trying to sell these to a local dealer, or should I just cash them in at the bank?

You might consider selling them on eBay. I've bought many rolls there and you'd definitely get more than face value for them.

If you don't ask, it's an automatic no. Try your local dealer, then eBay if you do that, otherwise keep them or spend them.

They are pennies. What is the harm in just keeping them in a closet in case another family member is a coin collector? Short of that, I would Ebay them. You should net more than putting them in a bank.

fill up a medium or small flat rate box and offer them here on the buy and sell forum. You will at least be passing them along to another collector. Sell them in groups is my suggestion.

The chances of a local shop being interested in them is remote, unless they know someone or have a ready customer in waiting, but even then you're not looking at much premium-wise, and depending on how far you have to travel, are more likely to end up in the hole than ahead. While rolls from this era, especially if original bank wrapped, can be "collectible" (either as rolls or for variety/high grade specimen searching, etc), they're more of a specialized interest and not something many will stumble through the door in search of. Perhaps you could make a few calls if you'd like, but I certainly would not suggest making a trip of any distance unless reasonably sure they're wanted and at a likely price you're okay with.

Unless in need of the money, especially if there's sentimental value, your best bet may be to simply keep them, but if your set on liquidating, eBay is likely your best option for connecting with the "right" potential buyers, or perhaps try offering them on a forum BST. Again, if at least true UNC rolls, there will be interested parties out there, but because it's a low dollar item (as a lot) with fairly substantial shipping costs, you're going to need to weigh the pros and cons of each option to decide which, if any, is worth your while.

No harm, except that this was a pretty substantial coin collection and is taking up a lot of space in an already overcrowded closet. Too many hobbies...

I haven't tried the coin shop yet, but I will. I live in Seattle, so I probably have a better chance than I would in a small town. I like the idea of them ending up with a collector, even if it's a kid, because they were my grandfather's. Most (75%) are in original bank rolls.

I dug up a whole bunch more today that are in acrylic tubes. Does anybody know if Whitman tubes from the 70's contained PVC?

I think most of those edited posts were people offering to buy some. I'm guessing the forum rules say that's a no-no unless it's in the marketplace?

I don't think the tubest ever had pvc.

I doubt coin shops will give you much for them, but it would be a place to get rid of them. Rolls in the 60's were extremely saved. Every dealer I ever met gets them in collections they buy.

If you just wanted them gone, for a fair price, list all of the rolls here on the for sale section, saying best offer in the next 25 hours get them, plus postage. No, I would not be making an offer sir, so thus is not a self serving suggestion. Selling them here saves Ebay fees and let's you sell to a collector. Ebay still would probably maximize the value, selling roll by roll, but that would take a lot of time.

Either way, best of luck to you.

    "1962-1969"...

    Otherwise a fine suggestion though.

I messed up. I made an offer on them, and i think the rules say you cant talk $ unless its in the 'selling' forum part. IDK. I am sorry to those I offended.
