Which is worth less: holed or cleaned?

I agree. Half of the time it's some guy who just wants to the coin a service. Whoever holes a coin does not have the coin's feelings in mind.

I've used DISTILLED WATER to steam the filthy pieces I've had and will give any tough cases an ACETONE DIPPING to see if they can be helped.Hope no one will try to tell ME I can't!

 

Think of it this way for every gomer that wrecks his coin,ours increase in PRICE/RARITY.HOORAY

 

Those tricks work exceedingly well with crusty roman coins - which are worth 50 cents before you clean them and 51 cents after...

 

I collect Roman and Medievel coins... all of which have been cleaned. I won't purchase a holed coin.

A medal isn't a coin. And if the particular medal is made [manufactured] with a hole that's another story.
