I Am Very New And I Know Nothing So Pls Be Gentle.... Thank You Ahead Of Time For The Replys Guys
Hi, Welcome! It is okay to hold a coin by the its edge, provided you grip it hard enough to hold it, but no so hard that you risk pushing the coin into your fingers so much that it may fingerprint the front or the back of the coin. Every coin has 3 sides. The front is called the obverse, the back is called the reverse, and the edge is called just that. Many people mistakenly refer to this as the rim. The rim is the portion of the coin that is raised, around the perimeter of the edge on the obverse and the reverse of the coin. I hope that my explanation was not too confusing, and if you have any more specific questions, I'll try and clarify. :smile
I should add, that you don't want to neccessarily always handle the coins without gloves, but if you just do it once or twice, your probably won't hurt the coin. The reason that gloves are a good idea, is that the oils in our skin can cause negative reactions with the metal which lead to corrosion or other problems. One thing you should know if you do not yet, is never clean your coins. Don't even so much as gently rub them with a tissue or you could risk causing permanent damage to the coin. You may however want to clean and polish some pocket change, as this may help you in learning how to spot cleaned coins.
to answer your questions.. there is no material that you can shien your coin with that wont leave minute scratches on the surface of the coin, thus downgrading its potential worth ... DONT DO IT MAN!!!
At the risk of sounding like a grammar *****, let me point out that you only need to capitalize the first word in every sentence, the pronoun "I," and proper nouns. Don't capitialize every word; it's just as bad if not worse than typing in all caps! Sorry, but that bugged me too much not to say anything. Anyway, in response to your question, NO, don't do it! You won't improve the coin that way and likely all you'll do is scratch the coin's surface. When handling the coin I suggest cotton gloves and even then avoid touching the coin's surface; hold it by the edge.
