Met a kind jeweller who allowed me to pick through a tray of coins that had come in over the years. He is pretty clued up so there weren't any gems but a nice lot to say the least. No money changed hands just trade.........I gave two pieces of silver and a fine 1689 first shield half crown. IMG_6140.JPG IMG_6141.JPG IMG_6146.JPG IMG_6147.JPG IMG_6148.JPG

    Nice!

I never thought to ask jewelers. How exactly do they "come in over the years"? People ask out of the blue if he/she buys coins?

Nice coins. I like any coin that depicts St. George slaying the Dragon. And it looks like you have 9 of them. Thanks for sharing!

This is the funniest thing! Just as I saw all those coins I was thinking "nice". Then, as I scroll down to see the comments, everyone else already beat me at it. I am still going to say NICE! NICE! NICE!!! Ha, ha!

Wait. You paid 20 pounds for the group you pictured in this thread? That is a great buy.

    Cool group of coins.

edit: nevermind - first group was on trade. Now we need a photo of the 20 quid group.

That looks like at least 200 quid's worth, so the pieces of silver must have been getting on for a kilo.

Very nice trade. May I ask where is this jeweler located?

I think retail would be far in excess of £200 and if not I made a loss. The jeweller is in Cheshire that's all I will say.

I tend to think in buying at auction terms, not retail which would obviously be a fair bit higher. Just about everything I have in coins came in that way, job lots like that, then I just tend to keep them after selling off the modern stuff. I'd probably keep about half of it.

I get some decent stuff from jewelers all the time. They buy for scrap value and turn them over when the price rises. A 1736 1/2 reale and a 1737 M 8 reale pillar dollar recently. A few seated dimes/capped bust 1/2 dime/Morgans in NICE condition too. I ask everyone I see when out "dirt fishing" and get some decent stuff in junk shops too.....

Certainly prices for this sort of stuff is increasing - which is a shame as it is exactly the sort of coin bundle I'd like to have purchased. The bits I want I'd keep and the rest put onto eBay in individual lots. Not a that sort of money though.
