i like to put bullion examples either in Quadrum squares and nicer coins in 2x2 flips and add the flips to an increasing number of Lighthouse coin boxes. Neither a problem apart from the relative cost of storage. My question is more about the coins that turn up that are probably worth less than a 2x2 flip. It feels wrong to chuck the nice ones and really not worth paying to store any number of them. Coins such as predecimal, not silver coins such as farthings up. Any thoughts?
If its not worth a flip, nothing wrong with storing them in bulk. As long as you are not banging the bag around, no damage should come of it. I have a few cloth mint bags with random world coins in the safe. If anything, it adds weight to the thing. Yeah, there are BU cheap coins in there, but as long as I am not picking the bag up and dropping it repeatedly, they shouldn't be getting any damage.
I keep my old British pennies in empty dishwasher tablet boxes and cat food boxes. Anything will do really. I did chuck them all in one big box but it became to heavy to move without a forklift. Silver I keep in an empty ice cream tub. Nicer stuff has a Victorian coin cabinet.
I store 90% in heavy-duty Glad 1-quart (zipper) freezer bags ($50 face). Works fine. I found I was spending a ton of money on plastic tubes, for no good reason, plus if you got a lot of "skinnies," a tube doesn't look like it's full.
The longer I collect coins the more obsessive compulsive I get! I do use ice cream tubs to store most of the cheap stuff (as I don't have a cat or a dish washer). I was going through some of the 'junk' yesterday and realised again that some of the UK predecimal coins are quite attractive. I also have some deco style French francs / centimes and Italian 1920-1940 coins that too good to live in a tub. Sadly no value in any of them. I think I need to look for an album for the cheap but good stuff. Anyone have any recommendations?
Be careful what you wish for... =========== For flexibility and low cost, it's hard to beat making your own album with the many styles of pages and binders available. At the very low end, you could use flips inserted upside-down into 20-pocket 3-ring plastic pages.
I like to use those boxes with all the dividers in them that are typically used to sort nuts and bolts, screws, and nails...They come in different sizes and close with clasps ...They don't take up a lot of space and can handle a lot of weight...they are often clear or with clear tops so you can see what you have in there...I just like them too....
