I was just reading a post on state quarters and it got me thinking. With only one or two years left in the program, do you think the old Washington quarter will resume, or will the fine folks in our government have the gutts to bring in a new design.
I think it may be tough to get people away from presidents on our coins, but I think it would be nice to have some fresh new designs with Liberty again.
    Any thoughts?

maybe Moy will use his new idea of Allegorical designs on the quarter after the State quarters finish. The lincoln cent, The jefferson nickel, the roosevelt dime, the washington quarter .. the are tired... they NEED to be retired. New collectors will appreciate these current designs if they are retired and new designs released. My entire life, all i have seen are these same tired designs. We need new life in our hobby.

as a disclaimer.. i am NOT saying the current disigns are bad/ugly or anything negative. I know alot of cointalk members hold alot of deep feelings for some of these desings (like the jefferson nickel as an example) and collect them evidly.....

all i am saying is the designs are tired. Taking the jefferson 5 cent piece and putting a new portriat, to me is not a new design. its still tired.

The kennedy i dont think is as tired as the rest, but i think it still needs to be changed.. its about that time. it starter in 1964 .. its been 43 years. Now is a very good time to change the half dollar as well.

I think they should change the 25 year rule. It should be not that they can change the design after 25 years, but that they must change them every 25 years. Just my 2 cents.

i agree.. i now lots of peeps love our current designs.. but think of it this way .. your favorite cousin comes to stay with you.. for a while its great.. but if he 'over stays' it becomes something else entirely.... the coins we have now, yes they were great, but IMHO they have over stayed ...

maybe a nice selection of Washington themed reverses of his life and legacy. i would love to see a Whiskey Rebellion or a Valley Forge quarter.

Here we go. I'm going to throw in some additional controversy.

Wait until the Presidential series is done, then completely revamp the currency. Don't just change the design. Make the new dollar equal to at least $5 of the current currency (maybe 10$). While you're at it, eliminate the $1 bill. The purchasing power of the penny is practically non-existent, and as such, is almost worthless, but I don't believe in eliminating the penny. Of course, I know the government would never go for it.

I would not care if they did away with the cent, just wait till the 2009 comes out. I would really like a 2009 S VDB.

If you don't eliminate it and have a 5-for-1 or a 10-for-1 inflation, wouldn't it then be a fifth or a tenth of a cent?

I'd like a T.R. quarter, you could put an eagle clutching san juan hill on the rev

i have seen washington on the 25 cent piece my whole life, i do not collect modern circulating coinage (for the most part) for just that reason - IMO they are in need of change .. at the bare minimum another dead prez should be put there, at the most exciting end, some other 'head' should be put there - lady liberty - past design or new depiction, would be my first pick. The artistic renderings of todays artistic talent can come up with some abosultley beautiful designs representing 'liberty' on the heads side - we should let American artistic talent show with pride!!

I like bqcoins' idea, but I don't imagine anything will change. Everybody is just too lazy to try and fight a battle over new designs, so they'll simply go back to the old design.

I think the greatness of American Coinage and Currency is that the designs are very stable and solid,
besides being highly artistic, articulate, and historical/cultural.

And all of a sudden an unexpected rarity shows up such as the 1999W $5 or $10 bullion eagle which makes
collecting very interesting. The '06 reverse proof design was also a great variation on an established theme.

    Long Live the Lincoln cent-penny!

I certainly hope they do not get gaudy like the European/Canadian/Australian mints.

Actually, what I mean, is that the new penny is worth the old nickel (or dime). Then you could buy things with small coins again. The value of the penny becomes worthwhile again. But it would be an entire revamping of the US currency, which is why it would never happen.
