I'm thinking about buying this but I'm not totally clued up on the 8 reale coins. Can anyone help me decide if it's genuine or not ? It's 27.02 grams, around 39mm. Thanks in advance, Mark.
The bank of England used an oval counter-mark dated 1797, on various 8 Reales from Bolivia, Peru, Mexico, Spain and Guatemala. Also on some 1 Ecu from France. Yours is from Mexico. The re-stamped coin had a value of 1 Dollar or 4 Shillings 9 Pence. The 27.02 g is consistent with the 27.0674 g for the 1797 Mexico 8 Reales (KM# 109). The host dates for the Mexico coins was from 1788-1808. Interesting coin. I like it.
Any time you see one of these raw, run like the wind. One of the riskiest coins you can buy unauthenticated on the market right now.
It looks like it has seen some circulation since it was stamped. Of course,it may be copying one that has seen some circulation, so see if you can find an unusual number for sale or anything identical. The provenance is important too. From here it looks OK, but I'm not where you are.
