Here is my new India, Maurya punch mark I acquired a few weeks ago. Anyone know the punches/info on it? 3.34g
There are a few of us who like punch mark coins, and personally love them. You are right about the coin being Mauryan dynasty. This would most likely Series IV based on apparent thickness, dating between the 4th and 2nd cent. BC. The correct term for your "Punch mark" is Karshapana. I like Panjak Tandon's website. http://coinindia.com/galleries-maurya.html
Here is the first Karshapana.... India Kingdom of Magadha Bimbisara to Ajatasatru AR Karshapana (BC 550- 470) 28 mm x 3.42 grams Obverse: 5 Large Punchmarks and one bankers mark(?), Archaic bent rayed sun, Bow with Arrow, 6 rayed design, Bull head circle Bull Head, Large Solar symbol, center Tree(?) Ref: G&H Series I (Variation) Note: Buddha Cash coin!
Nice, crisp punches on that coin. I have neither the references nor the expertise to size these things up. THCoins verified the attribution on mine - perhaps he'll come along and help.
Cool example, Mat => I have one of these in my want-list, but I haven't pulled the trigger, yet (congrats on adding that sweet dawg ... it's very cool) great link, Noob
DUUuuuuude! Nice coin! I have been on the lookout, but not a Search and Destroy mission yet! Very nice example! Now,,,,,I might have to go into a Search and Destroy mode...
That's it!!! 1960's Flower Power!!! You connected that thought in my mind! I kept wondering what this series reminded me of!!! LOL, time for @stevex6 to go APE on some cool graphics and coin examples to "expand our minds"...flower power meant a lot more than funky pics...
The coin is pretty wore but it might be pretty close to Naw no problem. I think the punchs are GH 549 on this page http://coinindia.com/galleries-maurya.html BTW - there evidence that the Karshapana of this type was in use well into the second century AD, and served as silver coinage under the Kushan in the east.
