Or can I post this newp? Ptolemaic Kingdom, Ptolemy VI Philometor and Ptolemy VIII, 170 - 164 B.C., BronzeAE 30, Svoronos 1424, SNG Cop 306 ff., Noeske 212 ff., Hosking 75, Weiser 142 (Ptolemy V, 180 - 176 B.C.), SGCV II 7900
Of course you can. You know there are beaucoup big bronze lovers here . Nice one! Is it from a fixed price store, eBay, or other?
It's from FORVM. I just decreased the luminosity on their image. This one adds a new denomination to my collection, along with a new reverse type and new emperors. Killed three birds with one stone.
PTOLEMAIC KINGS OF EGYPT Ptolemy VIII Euergetes II 145-116 BCE, Alexandreia mint AE28, 29.1 gm Obv: Diademed head of Zeus-Ammon right Rev: ΠΤΟΛΕΜΑΙΟΥ BΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ; Two eagles with their wings closed standing left on thunderbolt; cornucopia to left Ref: Svoronos 1424B (Joint reign of Ptolemy VI and VIII); Weiser 142 (Ptolemy V); SNG Copenhagen 308-310 (Joint reign of Ptolemy VI and Ptolemy VIII); Noeske 212-5 (Joint reign of Ptolemy VI and Ptolemy VIII); Lorber & Faucher Series 7C
I have only the one I have shown many times before. I like these, but I do not actively seek them (obviously). Nice looking coin JA. What's the size and weight?
Bravo TIF, love that one. There has been conjecture among scholars that the two eagles represent the joint reign of Ptolemies 6 and 8.
I consider it medium, but I look for good coins among these, rather than size - although I would eventually like examples of the largest ones. Who wouldn't?
I can't get enough! When I saw that picture I thought "That coin looks familiar" and was one I was eyeballing. Glad it got a good home. By decreasing the luminosity you made it look much better.
VERY, VERY nice examples JA and TIF. I recently posted my lower grade example, but it's about the same 'size' as both of yours---AE28 and about 30 grams and it's also my understanding that the two Eagles represents joint rule, but I'm glad to 'hear' it mentioned ... Here's mine, also from Forum (Auctions):
My only "two eagles" Ptolemaic. Not even fully attributable as far as I can tell. I definitely want to pick up a better one at some point. This one is around 24mm and 9 grams if memory serves correct, but I apparently never wrote the measurements down.
Sorry if I grabbed it out from under you! FORVM's got some very good deals on Ptolemaics these days, hard to resist.
I don't have a two eagles yet... Think on PtolemyBronze.com there's some discussion about the two eagles not meaning joint rule. I can't read the article right now
Nice!! => JA, that's a fantastic double-eagle Pt-VI (congrats ... great eye appeal) Man, I almost forgot that I owned this double-eagle winner (I keep forgetting to post it with my other Ptolemy coins) ... => wait-up, here is my example!! Ptolemy X AE24 Obverse: Diademed and horned head of Ammon Zeus Reverse: Two eagles on thunderbolt. Date: 116-80 BC Diameter: 23.9 mm. Weight: 8.8 gr.
