Another horrible picture of one my 7 coins. In hand the coin is gorgeous. It has reddish gold toning within the legend.

Ok i dont collect ancient coins but ive read a ton of these threads and i really enjoy looking at all the ancient coins. Ive learned a few things just from reading here. I especially like the 12 caesars sets. These are truly amazing. Thats a beautiful coin pishpash. Keep posting them!

Oh, I can get in on this one too!

Philip I, AR Antoninianus; Rome, AD 247.
Obverse: IMP M IVL PHILIPPVS AVG, radiate, draped & cuirassed bust right. Reverse: P M TR P IIII COS II P P, Felicitas standing left holding caduceus & cornucopia.

This was the coin that got me serious about collecting ancients in June, even though since 2013 I had bought 14 before it!

Steve, your Syrian coin is gorgeous. I love the coloring. The man opposite Tyche might be Philip II instead of Philip I.

=> thanks Valentinian (Warren?) ... the folks from CNG had it labelled as Phil-I (do you know something that they don't know?) ...

Ummm, how can you tell if it's Phil-I or Phil-II?

    thanks in advance

The old answer was always that Philip I had a beard and Philip II did not but there are many, especially Eastern, beardless coins that I consider a bit old looking to be the boy. There is also a question of why there are so many coins for Philip II from the last year of the reign if it is true that the two died at the same time.
Philip the one or the other:

Thanks, Doug ... yah, it is difficult to determine whether Phil has a beard on my coin? (it kinda looks like Phil and Tyche both have 5 o'clock shadow?)

Hey, I just went and looked on-line through the CNG archives and discovered two things:

firstly, apparently I must have gotten caught-up in the moment and ended-up spending too much on my cool example (probably not a big surprise to many of you?)

secondly, I found numerous examples of my Syrian Tyche coin-type that seemed identical to my failing-eyes, but which must have seemed slightly different to the dude that was labeling the coins, for they were categorized into both, Phil-I and Phil-II ...
however, I think Valentinian may be on to something, for there seemed to be a few more Phil-II's compared to Phil-I's (perhaps Ardy will notice this thread and chime-in?)

Oh, and thirdly, I seem to have successfully derailed another perfectly good coin-thread (sorry Pish)
