U.S.A 1966 Roosevelt ONE DIME -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hey guys while going through my box i came across this little coin. It is is complete pefect condition (shiny) on the front it has 2 leaves and an olympic torch. On the back the head of Roosevelt. I look it up and found this site: http://www.fastcoin.com/key-coins.htm It is silver press ctrl f and search for 1966. You will see the exact same coin i have selling for like 900 dollars! Im really not sure if this is correct or i may not have the right one or something. I need help with idetifying my coins value, autheticity etc. Thanks in advance Also i have the same coin in a 1971 version. I see that it sold for 20 dollars on ebay.
dud: First, it is unlikely to be silver, look at the rim and see if you can see any copper. Second, it may be plated silver. Probably, if it is silver (not likely) you'll have to get it certified by a grading service, if you have any desire to sell it. Good luck.
Hello.. the coin you are making reference to is a 1966 Rosie..it is graded by PCGS as a MS 68 Cameo "uncirculated". First coin I have ever seen graded as "CAM" that is a MS coin. Anyone else? That maybe the reason for the $$$$ RickieB
On closer inspection you are correct. Has been silver coated, can see little bits of copper on the edges
dudlite.. The coin is not silver coated...dimes, qtrs, halfs after 1964 are clad. 1964 and pre 1964 they are silver 90% RickieB
Well that depends...question for you: 1. Did you get it from circulation? You know in change from somewhere? 2. Cut it out of a Mint Set 3. Buy it from a dealer? 4. Find it in a jar of change? You have to look for contact marks, rub, general wear. Get a Redbook and look up the value. My 2007 Redbook says that 1966 dimes there were 1,382,734,540 of them made. In MS-65 they are worth 1.25 The certified coin you saw is priced that way due to it being a select coin. More than likely one of just a few in that condition. RickieB
Walmart, Barnes & noble, Waldenbooks, Amazon.com, just about any bookstore or hobby shop, just about anyplace that comes up in a Google search for "coin supplies", and lots of other places. BTW, with rare exceptions, the standard convention is that the "heads" side of a coin is the obverse (front) and the other side is the reverse (back). Also being shiney does not necessarily mean a coin is in "perfect condition", as it may have been polished or otherwise surface damaged.
The coin at the web site is a SMS (Special Mint Set) dime. It can be very proof like and of course it can have a cameo effect. Because it is not considered a proof it will get a MS (Mint State) and not a PR (Proof) designation. The SMS coins were minted from 1965-67 in San Fransico. They are not considered proofs but some are very proof like in appearence. Just remember this: the 1964 dime was minted from 1964 through 1967, which gives rise to the possiblity that a silver planchet for the 1964 dime could have gotten into the presses minting your 1966 dime. Get the coin weighed to determine if it is truely silver or it is just an altered coin. Take your time do your homework and you'll do well sorting this issue. Get into a big hurry and you might be sorry later.
From the way you are spelling "tonne" I am wondering where you are from? If not the U.S., the advice for where to look for books, etc. might be slightly different, as might the general advice being posted. Those of us in the US see these same dimes every day but maybe someone from outside the US might not be as familair with them.
A 1966 silver dime? That would be extremely valuable since the Mint stopped using silver in dimes in 1964. As a matter of fact, the only coin denomination with any amount of silver in it made after 1964 was the Kennedy half dollar, and that contained 40% silver, also known as silver clad.
Resurrecting a six year old thread? Is this valuable? Why not start a new thread in the here and now and include pics to boot?
I too have a 1966 dime, silver in color with a flaming torch on the back. Is this a valuable coin??????
