Wow, MagMax => that's a great new Julian-II (and congrats buying from a Canadian dealer!) Oh, and I love the mountain lion photo (or cougar, or puma ... beautiful animals) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cougar I have two Julian-II examples to share (I love 'em both) Julian II AE1 (AE26) - Double Maiorina Julian II AE3 (AE20)
Thanks for the fun writeup! I do like Julian II and one of these days will buy some of his coins. I'm going to put him on the "interesting dead people you'd invite to a dinner party" list .
Love the posts and especially your OP and narrative MM.. My only siliqua is of Honorius, but I have a few bronze coins of Julian and this being my best---a somewhat stylized version of the bull reverse which is better in hand than the sellers photos--- far smoother surface among other things:
Very nice Mike Z! I remember reading that while Julian was in Antioch, the citizens rioted and one grievance was that their money had a "Pagan" image of a bull on it.
Great find, MM - well struck, centered, not clipped, no horn silver, nice toning. A great example of the type.
My two of Julian II are quite modest, opportunistic eBay snipes for dirt cheap, but they do represent him as both Caesar and Augustus...
I like the comparison between these two. On the left we see the inexperienced young Caesar; on the right we see a bearded, battle hardened solider Emperor.
I propose to you one of my 59 siliquas of Julian II in my collection. The last I Buy came The last one whom I bought came from the mint of Lyon, and it was unpublished for this mint. I represent it to you. Good to see you here my friend! To those who don't know Siliquae, he has helped me immensely with my collection of Siliquae these past few months and is THE guy to go to when it comes to Siliquae! Also, stunning Julian II Siliqua!
Love it! Arles is one of the better mint styles for Siliquae Constantius II AR Siliqua 2.23 grams PCON (Arles) mint 17mm
I have just buy a siliqua, imitation for Julien II. The prototype is the siliqua that Magnus Maximus shows us at the beginning of this message (RIC365). I have from 2 years an almost identical with the same reverse die. A/ FL CL IVLIA-NVS PRP AG R/ VOTIS/V/MVLTS/X//TR(PALM) A/FL CL IVLIA-NVS PRP AVG R/ VOTIS/V/MVLTS/X//TR(PALM) It shows that he had to have important issues of silver either for a simple forgery there, or by itinerant mints which struck during movement of the army of Julien II. For the siliqua, Julien II was the most important "imitative" August (from Siliqua database) :
Not Siliquae, but I do have a couple more Julian II for those that like seeing his coins. JULIAN II Aquileia RIC VIII 218 Scarce JULIAN II Arles RIC VIII 271 JULIAN II Sirmium RIC VIII 76 JULIAN II Siscia RIC 363
That is very interesting Siliquae! I think you are right, the Legions must have used mobile military mints as it would be far too dangerous to ship silver billion to Trier to mint at that time. @Topcat7 Very nice AE's my friend!
