I was keeping up with this thread over there. I remember seeing the coin sell on ebay in the PCI holder for $200. I cannot believe that coin made it into a PCGS holder....and a grade poin higher as well. Here is a link to the coin in question : http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=150116590889
John: Wow, thanks for the posting, I think that PCGS has lost their mind! Or someone figured out how to open & reseal the PCGS holder.
Somebody has way too much time on their hands. Thats got to be one of the worst looking AT coins I've seen, well, besides the Peace Dollar that I posted a little while back. The sad part is that PCGS actually slabbed the thing.
The fact that this coin managed to gain a point in a PCGS slab is an indictment on PCGS, not something to PCI's credit, lol... Though even PCI called it "questionable toning." Whoever slabbed that at PCGS had to have been color blind or something.
I have purchased several ASEs in PCI holders and found the grading to be very reasonable with that coin series, definitely more strict than ICG. Also, PCI is so disrespected that the slabbed ASEs didn't really cost any more than raw.
Actually it is new and will likely impact the crazy premium people have been paying for Monster Toned Coins.
Trust me John, it has happened many, many times in the past. And it has never made a bit of difference - although I do keep hoping it will
Doug there is sure a lot of activity going on with this Artificially Toned situation, another thread has started http://forums.collectors.com/messageview.cfm?catid=26&threadid=583037&STARTPAGE=1 and there is one going on at the NGC Forum too. I think these florescent coins are going to take a price pounding in the market.
There you go... even if the toning is natural (yeah right lol) it's still just plain ugly imo. Like I said before the fact that PCGS didn't immediately body-bag this as AT is a negative mark against PCGS, not a positive one for PCI. At least PCI marked it as "questionable toning" (though even "questionable" is too generous, as it's obviously artificial. Don't need to be a grading expert to figure that out, just need to have functioning eyes!)
boy that thing is garbage. I remember looking at nice ms 1949 s dime a few years back that had some light toning on it. I wasn't real happy about the toning at the time but inquired as to the price anyway because I really wanted a nice ms peice for my set. They guy quoted me 100% of book value because of the desireable toning, I scoffed. Now I own some nicely toned coins but I'll be darned if I'm going to pay an outrageous premium for them, who is to say toned coins won't be out tomarrow and balzing white specimens will be back where it is hot.
Here's the thread on the NGC forums on the coin in question...Mike http://boards.collectors-society.com/showflat.php?Cat=0&Number=1766875&an=0&page=0#Post1766875
Ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww........................................ Could that coin be any more obviously AT?
