great story? I had to look it up ... http://www.collectorsweekly.com/stories/54908-1958-british-columbia-centennial-totem
well, there's a part of the story that the above mentioned article left out. The totem pole features a raven, which is said to be a symbol of death in native American culture. Therefore the coin features a "death totem". That's the part of the story that I find interesting!
http://www.gullitotempoles.com/TotemPoleSymbols.html http://shop.slcc.ca/node/5 http://www.whats-your-sign.com/raven-symbolism.html death, eh? ... hmmm??
here's a 1958 news article about the 'death money': http://fultonhistory.com/Newspapers 23/Jamestown NY Post Journal/Jamestown NY Post Journal 1958/Jamestown NY Post Journal 1958 - 0304.pdf ....the story about someone gambling 23,000 pounds of frozen shrimp in a poker game is kind of interesting too
hmmm....article about death money seemed to have killed the thread....needs new life.....here's a recent pickup, a 1908 Canadian Fifty Cent, VF30.
I picked up this 2013 specimen set for the $2 coin with the bears. Frustratingly I can't get a good closeup picture of the Bears. I can't scan through the plastic well enough.
Man, ya gotta love the sweet ol' Newfie coins, eh? jj => once you score your final date, you should try to show them all off "together"
Heres a 1858 Large Cent I just pick up from stldanceartist. Heres a quote on this coin from Bill in Burl: The '58 is a Turner OC1/RB5 and it was approx 9.3% of the 1858's minted. This coin was late in the striking run, with the D/C at leaf 6 first, then the T, then leaf 7. then leaves 11 & 14.... you have all of them
