DOMITIAN AE quadrans. RHINOCEROS advancing left, head down. Colosseum opening commemorative. Spectacular little Rhino DOMITIAN AE orichalcum quadrans. Struck circa 83 AD. Rhinoceros walking left. Reverse - IMP DOMIT AVG GERM around SC. 16mm, 2.2g. An excellent rhinoceros, one of the nicest examples I've seen. Quadrantes were very rarely struck on yellow orichalcum
Wow, one of the best engravings I've seen on this series. This coin is going to make medoraman drool.
Its a very nice one, and a scarcer rhino left. I think last count I only have 6 rhino left, but about 11 of the slightly more common rhino right. I had never heard about it being struck for the colosseum opening. Do you have a source for this? Btw, very, very rare animal for ancients. As far as I am aware, it is only on two ancient coins, this one, (found both right and left), and a dichalkon of Trajan from Egypt, (also found right an left). Both issues very scarce.
Sweeet!! Wow ro1974, that's a great rhino ... yup, I really need to score myself one of these Domitian rhinos (very cool lil' examples) *sigh* ... I merely have one of the pre-mentioned-left-facing-run-of-the-mill Trajan rhinos ... => Lil' LIZ
No, you actually have what I believe is the scarcest of the 4 types of rhinos Steve. In my experience the left facing dichalkon is the scarcest of all of them. Interesting portrait too. Let me know if you ever wish to trade.
Thats a nice one to thanks for showing and the reactions http://www.vcoins.com/en/stores/anc..._198_quadrans__rhinoceros/525811/Default.aspx http://www.vcoins.com/en/stores/apo...tian_ae_quadrans__rhinosc/518822/Default.aspx mabye are those nice for you
A little bit less ancient, there is a very nice Indian Rhinoceros-Slayer gold dinar issued under the rule of Kumaragupta from the beginning of the 5th century AD. An example can be found on this page: http://coinindia.com/galleries-kumaragupta.html It is a bit pricier than the other examples though.
Great, thank you. From the rarity and artistry, I am imagining this is well into the 4 figures, if not 5. Would that be right?
