Can't really call myself a "collector" of ancients yet, but just wondering if the mint marks on ancients add to the value of the coin...e.g. 1955 vs. 1955s cent. Are there lots of the same ancient coins with different mintmarks?
In general I would say no. In most cases the mint, not necessarily the mint mark itself adds value. For example some mints produced coins of superior workmanship while others produced garbage. There are scare mints, and there are mints in which a famous evenT occurred in the time the coin was struck. Some people want a specific type from every mint that made the coin. Some mints made many and other made few (or few survive.) Some coins have interesting mint marks, would you pay more for two coins in the same condition, where the mint mark is circle, as opposed to the mint mark being an extinct plant, or a lobster or some other oddity, than the answer is yes. This could add some value but everything is worth what someone is willing to pay.
Oh yes, oh yes, oh yes Here are just 6 from about 20 that I own of the same type from the same mint. Minted in Cyzicus, Emission 3, from different workshops. A.D. 280 I have other emissions too.
