Ok I found an interesting coin in my bank rolls I got of the keelboat nickels! Take a look at the photos, I'm calling it the Longboat Variety.. Has anbody seen anything like this before? Look at the rear of the boat, a normal nickel is flat on the variety the boat seems to extend out an extra millimeter. It is visible to the naked eye and caught my attention as I was looking through the new roll for some high grade examples.. anyway, just thought I'd share it and see what you all thought! Thanks for looking! DAK

The variety is shown in picture 005 the normal nickel is in 006 for comparison. It is a raised area and not a scratch, I have found 5 so far of this variety from this same set of dies. Maybe insignificant, but I enjoyed finding it!!

I actually think it might be more of a CUD myself... its not just a thin line, the whole area between the line is raised like the die was chipped at the edge of the design.. Just my thoughts, but I've been wrong many times before. Thanks all... DAK

    dak,

It is definitely an uneven Die Crack which developed along the rear of the design element (the back of the Keelboat)! The reason that is looks like a Cud to you is that the planchet metal is pressed into the Die Crack when the coin is struck with the Dies and it shows up on the coin as a raised area.

    Ruben,

It is a little hard to see the Die Crack unless you can increase the size of the picture but it is there! Just click on the picture on the left, look below where the Flag is mounted to the Keelboat and along the back of the boat, you will see a slightly squiggly line running along about two-thirds of the back of the boat.

Hey Slu, Thanks for the picture work! That is a pretty cool way to display the crack. I know a lot of folks are like rolling their eyes and thinking jeez... just a die crack... but I find this kind of stuff interesting! I am entertained easily I guess (and cheaply) ( Idon't have the budget to go for nice silver coins which is what I love) I got 40 new rolls of keelboats from the bank this last week, they are just overstocked with old surplus of these Westward journey nickels. I opened up a bunch more rolls and have found approx 120 with this same die crack. If there are any nickel collectors or crack collectors out there interested, I would send out a free nickel with this crack on it too them, all I would ask is you send a self addressed stamped envelope, I'll stick one in a flip and return it to you, I'd be happy to share! Just send me an email using the feature in my profile and I'll provide my mailing address. Good day to ya all. DAK

Looks like te die was chipping along the back of the boat.

that's because the mint is using generic dies.

I don't think it is a "cud" dak , if it were it would be out by the rim of the nickel I think this is more of a die crack and no real value on this coin keep looking there out there.

Yep, I think you are probly right, but it was fun to find! I'm still learning a lot on variety coins, especially nickels. It is a very interesting subject to me! It was interesting to me because it has wider points and narrow points as if the edge of the boat design had chipped off the die. Its not just a thin line like a lot of the cracks I've spotted. everything between the line and the design is raised. Since my post of this I have found and set aside 240 of these coins with this crack/chip feature all from the same set of dies, as I went through 75 rolls of these in there original wrapper. So definately not rare! Anyway, Thanks for the input guys and gals, I always enjoy reading your comments!!
