Looks like more details have come out about the Apollo 11 anniversary coins. They'll be curved coins like the baseball ones, with a gold, silver, and clad version. Full story here: http://www.coinnews.net/2015/06/18/apollo-11-50th-anniversary-commemorative-coins-proposed/ I think this is a worthy topic for a coin - interested to see the proposed designs.
The Mint would produce an anniversary coin about dog poop if they thought they could make money from it. Chris
Great idea, Frank! Let's get together and start pre-selling them now. First Day of Issue - PF70UCAM & MS70 - $1,999.00 Shipped Chris
Interesting, they are proposing a two sided coin (no edge). I would suspect they would have a real problem with die breakage.
What's wrong with making a commemorative for one of the most important scientific achievements in the history of humankind??? Geez, you guys are brutal.
If there is no edge, wouldn't it be more a "toroidal" hemisphere, if such a thing exists? Imaging a filled sphere and pushing upward in one dimension such that it collapses/ folds into itself. Now that'd be a cool coin!! Now, how could you "coin" that with a traditional die and collar? It would have to be "formed" somehow methinks. EDIT- Here's is the only shape I could find that matches what I'm picturing in my mind. I don't know how it would be described in math/geometry other than a filled toroid or a sunken/depressed sphere...
American astronaut Scott Kelly set a 520 day total (record) for being in space congrats maybe we will get a 50th anniversary coin 7/20/2019 . http://www.spacedaily.com/m/reports...tronaut_Scott_Kelly_adjusts_to_Earth_999.html http://www.king5.com/story/life/sho...6/30/apollo-coin-bellevue-rare-gold/29530873/ http://www.collectspace.com/news/news-061615a-apollo11-50th-coins-usmint.html
This. There is plenty to complain about the mint and the modern commemorative program, commemorating the moon landing is not one of them. It was a more significant event than 95 percent of the other commemoratives and that includes the classic ones as well
