I have my wife's permission (as long as I sell something else) - but I need re-assurance

    Hi all,

I've got the go-ahead to make what is probably my largest single coin buy ever - a 1934-S Peace Dollar in MS64. And the opportunity has arisen (on ebay of all places) and there is an NGC graded MS64 1934-S Peace Dollar at no-reserve auction. I've been building an MS64 set for the last 2 years, this is the "big one."

My question is - the legitimacy. It's a rare one, and fraud is first on my mind.

The label across the bottom - is solid brown. The labels for NGC tend to have a fading NGC buried on them. In fact there was an earlier posting for a gold coin that was flagged off (with Cointalk assistance) and this was one of the "tells" that people found on the auction.

I reviewed the coin on NGC's site and there is no image to compare details with (which is odd considering the rarity and value of the coin).

The mint mark is a micro-s and it leans left (indicating VAM-2).

The seller is a long time member in good standing with excellent feedback. Returns are offered.

What do YOU all think? Normally I wouldn't post something like this in hopes of not advertising to the buying competition - but my guess is that a lot of you aren't in the market for this coin, and a purchase this size is generally planned.

Any advice or direction is appreciated. If I could see the image on NGC, I'd feel a heck of a lot better about this buy.

    Nerves nerves nerves!!!

Some pics courtesy of Heritage Auctions. Same grade (and TPG) as on e-bay.

Not a great pic to compare........

  6. Great, I am going to snipe that one. J/K :D. I think it is fine. Seller has lots of transactions with 99.9% rating and most importantly offers returns. BTW: I would set a specific price you are willing to pay and go no higher. You don't want to get carried away and overspend. Good luck! TC

It looks legit to me. Just because photos aren't available on the Cert Look-up doesn't mean anything. This happens a lot.

I would not advertise on a public forum how excited you are to bid on a very expensive coin. If the seller saw this, shilling would be very tempting. Also, a couple people could bid just for the heck now, knowing you want it more.

The coin is solid and looks accurately graded. On a purchase like this I think it is perfectly acceptable to get others opinions. If you win this auction it will be a solid addition to your collection. I LOVE Peace Dollars too!

If it was me shopping, I would look for a coin from another seller. greattoning has a large following, and his coins tend to go for a premium because of it.

I'm not crazy about it either. Lots of luster, so if that's your thing...

The case looks okay, it's an older one, but it looks okay to me.

    Whatever you choose, good luck!

These seem to be much more plentiful in PCGS holders. I compared using the PCGS "Shop" feature and Collectors Corner. This is also confirmed using HA.com.

    It's like 5:1 !

You could try buying a PCGS MS64 and crossing. That way you would have more of a pick over which 1934-S you choose.

More work, with some downside risk, but I figure you could always sell it if it wont cross in-grade. Just an idea.

The population report for this coin is ~500 in PCGS, ~300 in NGC unless I mis-read something.

My access to HA is horked, lovely time for it.

We will see, maybe I'll just wait for the next coin show.

There's a cynic in every crowd.

I'd go for another example and maybe look for one that is also blessed by CAC. You also might want to consider that the seller, greattoning, has a LOAD of followers. Much higher chance that you will pay top dollar rather than a true reasonable dollar. Just something to consider.
