In my non-expert opinion it seems like it could be a test piece for aligning the reverse die. In other words, a die new die pair was put in the press and a test strike was made. It was seen that the reverse die was rotated so it was moved and another strike was made. Still not aligned correctly so the die was moved again and a final, correct strike was made. This, of course, does not tell how the obverse managed to remain in alignment with the obverse die through three strikes, or why the triple strike only shows on the bottom of the reverse, or why the same coin would be used instead of three different ones. Is that a die clash on the obverse under the "UNITED"? Oh well, my opinion is worth exactly the amount you paid for it.
First off that's a nice coin!! I was looking at it and to me it looks like the dominant strike is over the weaker strikes so I don't understand how it could be post mint however I'm no expert by any means lol.
Do you have pictures or searchable references to the "...many similar counterfeits [you] encountered..."?
I also think if that were the case the reeds would be all boogered up...not as clean as the appear to be. Im gonna trust @Conder101 and @mikediamond on this one.
In my non-expert opinion to create three or four times fake weak strike under original strike, without breaking any line of original strike, no matter how carefully you are totally impassable . How many are agreed with this point ?
I'm of the opinion it's a counterfeit error as well. I think the reeds or the obverse would be disturbed as well.
Sorry for my non expert question , do you have any pictures or searchable references to the some one use fake die to created the weak strike under original strike like this one ? also if here passable something cause in the reverse also cause obverse to make UNITED appears to be warped ? here i took some more pictures see if can help .
Boy did I just learn a lot. A piece of brass, some leather...I was a hoping, but for only one side of the coin to show issues---makes sence. Super cool thread...wow!!!
you still dont get my point , if want learn how it create like this . we need some more pictures or resources to learn . not just brass and some leather .
Having heard from Mr Diamond, if you are not satisfied with the answer the only option is to send it to him or maybe Mr. Potter for an in hand evaluation.
