1857 Flying Eagle Die Clash

I remember reading about the die clash from the Eagles Beak but looking on NGC coins it doesn't match up.

What is this clashed with?

I'm not seeing a clash.

 

The three important clashes for this coin were with the half dollar, quarter and the $20 gold piece. The one you have is not one of those. Where are you seeing a clash?

 

Above the head and below the beak on the obverse.

 

How did they manage to clash cent dies with those? I can't see a reason why they'd be opposite of each other in a press...

It's a really fun story. We will never know for sure what was really going on. I figured the watchman brought his girlfriend into the mint to show her how big his press was. She probably left with her pockets full of cents.

 

It's hard to catch clash marks in images. I can see clash marks on the reverse in the left field. I'm thinking both dies were FE dies.

 

C'mon, isn't the pressure exerted by the press more important than the size of the press?

No. It is not anything like an S-8. The OP coin is not listed by Snow.

 

Interesting! Yeah, definitely not a 9 or 7, but of the three I looked at, closest was 8. I'll be reading and learning... : )

 

This is the reverse of the S-8. It was clashed with the quarter.
