So I missed the boat on the Truman C&C Set yet somehow Home Shopping Network had 800 units for sale on their site for a 17,000k mintage. But Eisenhower C&C is coming out in August so what's everyone's feeling on the 2015 set? Eisenhower will be 17k, JFK 25k & LBJ 17k. So are they really worth the purchase for long-term investment? Just to have? Or to turn and burn on the secondary market right when it sells out? And should you buy 1 or 2-3 or the 5 limit? Truman sold out in 15 minutes. I know FDR is still available, but that one seems very lackluster. I think the only thing with these four sets is the Reverse Proof Presidential Dollar Coin. A silver medal is a silver medal, no big deal really. Btw the prestigious Reverse Proof is now getting as common as an UNC every year. So I don't really see the demand. Is a 17k minted Reserve Proof $1 coin really that great? No one likes those damn things even as a Proof let alone the UNC version.
IMO, these are a terrible vehicle for a long term investment. Short term (along the lines of 15 minutes) yes but anything over a year is going to cost the buyers money. Sure, there are those that'll spout off about the low mintage and the unique "reverse proof" but the fact of the matter is that the coin just doesn't have ANY eye appeal. None! Zero! Coins that lack "eye appeal" usually lacks a following that is willing to pay a healthy premium and there is just no two ways about it. Come to think of it, the ONLY Reverse Proof that even comes close to having eye appeal is the 2006 SAE. The 2011 was to gunked up with that phoney dippling masquerading as frost to have any real appeal. The Roosevelt is just too danged small to have any eye appeal. Now, if the US Mint had chosen to do the "Enhanced Uncirculated" finish on the coins, then they'd have a winner that "might" survive over the long haul.
Buy the max, you can't go wrong, as all similar sets over the last 20 years have been big winners. Add to that, these are the lowest mintage of them all and part of what may be a very popular series someday. The coin looks great too, the statue side is the best, a sparkly gem.
As far as the big boys selling hundreds of them.... Every box I've sold on ebay have been bought buy them to resell. They are into these pretty deep $ wise.

Yes, buying from the mint would be the preferred way to buy. But, at times, when the flippers have flooded the market, keeping prices low, there may be deals in the initial aftermarket.
