Hi there, I am trying to research a medal or medallion, and wondered if anybody's expertise would cover this area? It dates 1989, looks to be Soviet in style and language (with sickle and scythe designs and a portrait on obverse- also the number 70 is featured). The reverse has a signature across it with AK at the top and pictures of guns on the bottom half. I am having problems with my computer at the moment, so uploading a pic is not possible, but if anyone can identify it I would be very grateful (and impressed!!). Thank you in advance wonderful people!
Yep, worked fine. Don't know anything about this particular medal, but it obviously commemorates the 80th birthday of Mikhail Kalashnikov. Christian
Thank you Christian, I hadn't even got that far with it! I now have something to go on- much obliged to you!
I'm with Christian. Kalashnikov designed the AK47 in 1947, so it must commemorate his birthday. Chris
It is soviet era and is definitely commemorating his birth (born on Nov. 10, 1919). There was probably a fairly low mintage due to the fact that 1989 was the start of the USSR's collapse.
Brilliant info everyone- explains why I cannot seem to find it online. Thank you all ever so much- your community came highly recommended, and you have exceeded my expectations!! Thanks again!!
Kalashnikov was a weapons researcher whose intent was to design a weapon to protect his homeland. Over the years, as he saw the AK47 used in various invasions and wars, he expressed regret and even said that he should have invented a lawnmower. Still, he was a respected hero in the Soviet Union and this medal, as well as one issued in 2009 to honor his 90th birthday, were tokens of respect. The Soviets issued hundreds of medals honoring different people and accomplishments over the years. I was unable to find how many of these medals were issued.
