Anyone know of a way to keep track of your collection?

Right now I'm using an Excel sheet to keep track, but it makes it difficult to add new items. I have tried using a paper copy before but it's not very neat/organized. So I'm looking for some website or application that can keep track off your collection and is easy to use.

    Thanks for the help!

Why is it difficult to add new entries? Seems pretty easy to me.

I guess it just might be the way I have it set up.

Buy a book or take a class about how to use Excel, it will do most anything

Well, the way I have mine, I can just copy and paste a similar entry from one line to the next... Can you not do that?

I mean, yeah... it's time consuming to type it all down, but as with organizing anything properly, I think it will be best in the long run. And I haven't seen a commercial option that would save much time, honestly. The only thing that could be better is the way you could potentially save images of coins in a program rather than a spreadsheet (if you care about such things.)

As I thought, you are not doing it the correct way.

You have to start out with a list of Variables: Like Denomination, Date, Mint, Metal, Price Paid, Date Received, etc. whatever you want, as many as you want.

These are on the top ROW 1 as your categories which occupy all the COLUMN below the first ROW.

Then all you do is start at ROW 2, click on the CELL below each category so that you have a ROW for each coin.

Be sure to name and save that file so that you can add to it anytime.

Consider the app coinvault. There are other coin apps you can put your collection info in with pictures

Thank you everyone for the Excel input but that's not really what I'm looking for.

You guys don't just carve your initials into the coin and toss it into a cookie jar? :)

Yeah, sorry Sullysullinburg, I made some mistake and my first reply never got posted. A quick Google Search yielded a few commercial options, some of which I have tried over the years but I always ended up back with Excel. : )

True that. That pretty much sums up my engineering class I took this spring.

If it were me Sully, and you may already have it set up this way, I'd have denomination, date, mint, etc. across the horizontal axis and let each coin take up its own row.

To add another row or column, just right click in the area you want to add a row/column and choose insert and then choose row/column. It also may be easier to click and draw over an array of cells and then drag the selected array. You can also move an entire row or column by clicking the A, B, C... or 1, 2, 3... on the top and left edges and it'll highlight the row/column and you can drag it to move it.

You might already know all of this, but if not I hope you find it useful.

Edit: just saw your post about not wanting Excel, but if anyone else happens to find this someday I hope it's helpful to them :)

I have been using a windows computer program called Pro-coin. They went out of business about 1.5 years ago. but the program still works for me. But it is difficult to add new coin dated 2013 to 2015. you have to create them one at a time, NO update database list to choose from. But from 2012 back to 1700's coins, they are in the database and you just have to select the coin to add & type in your info.

There ya go! McBlzr -- great record.

There are several programs available, and you can try them all. Simple or more complex, whatever you want.

This have been discussed before. Do a search for coin software and see what you get.
