What do you consider a hoard?

Saw this asked on another forum and thought it was interesting. I have a decent amount of a certain date set aside of the $2 1/2 Indians.

A collection large enough that the owner doesn't actually know what, and/or how many coins there are.

Keep buying them and then sell it as the "<your name here> Hoard." Nothing drives up prices (but not necessarily value) like the hype of being part of a hoard! :)

    Curious, what date is it?

A hoard could be any amount.

A hoard of 1896 S Barber quarters could be as little as 10 pieces.

    The same for a 1913 S quarter

I have a hoard of 2001-D Kennedys missing the reverse clad layer.

I agree with this. With common wheat cents, you have to have a TON of them for it to be a hoard. But on a coin with not many known, you could have 2 or 3 and have a hoard. I would say a hoard would be enough of a coin to move the market on them if you released them all at once.

1911. I am always buying and selling these old gold, but can never seem to sell my 1911's because I am always afraid I will accidentally sell a 1911-D weak D, haha.

Anyone that has coins that I want has a "hoard."

Anyone that has less coins than me is not a serious collector. :)

In all seriousness, I consider a "hoard" as having enough of any single type or denomination to actually skew the population and pricing.

The GSA hoard of CC coins is an extreme example.

That would be a pretty pricey mistake. But there is something special about having a bunch of the same coin. It would be neat to compare die varieties, etc. between them if you were bored one day.

I've found 3 weak D's in my mini hoard. I occasionally send a few in to see if I can get any more, but so far I think those are my only 3.

    That's the thing about definitions - everybody's got a different one ;)

But ya know what, if you actually look the word hoard up, there is never a number mentioned. The definition of a hoard is - a supply or accumulation that is hidden or carefully guarded for preservation, future use, etc.

If you have more coins than I do, it's a hoard.

Hoarding is bad, and you should feel bad if you do it.

Fortunately, you can just send some coins to me. Then you'll have fewer coins than I do, so you won't be a hoarder, and you won't have to feel bad.

In seriousness, enough to be able to affect the market if released at once

So if put your 2 Wheaties in Crap slab's from the Treashunt hoard you would be famous . ...but not famous enough to get a like from Doug. :)
