-"Maybe I've misunderstood what really happened but how is it that you knew the gold was mixed in with the nickels while no one else in the room did?"

The auction was set up in the shape of a U, and so were the tables and chairs. I was sitting literally right in front of the table with the coins, on the bottom of the U. There were 3-4 other coin/gold buyers, but they were seated on the upper part of the "U", all they saw was the ringman's back. Also I noticed 2 of them happened to be turned and talking to someone else during the auctioning off of the lot with the gold coin.

so lemme git this straight, you won a gold coin for 3 dollars, then when it was found to be a mistake you still got 80 bucks for it?

And now yer upset because yer thinking that you should HAVE gotten the FMV of the coin?

This reminds me back in the day, the company was humming, ot was plentiful, then at the big meeting the prez announces that they had planned to make 58 million that year and ended up only making 36 which was a loss of 22 million, so sorry boys, no raises or bonuses.

Ya know, sometimes it is better to appreciate your good luck rather then focus on the negative.

Listen, you win something big at the tables, take your winnings and go home, were you waiting to see how many more gold coins you were going to pick up for 1 percent of their value?

I do not agree with the idea you should HAVE paid FMV for the coin, if it were me, I would have taken my winnings and taken it home, if the auction had erupted into a bidding war, and two stubborn donks were not going to let the other guy get the coin, and it had ended up hammering for ten times the FMV the auction house sure is not going to say, sorry folks, this is a mistake the fmv of this coin is only 340, so here winning bidder.

OTOH, if you do attend a lot of these auctions, your letting the auctioneer buy back his mistake could be repaid down the road, it might HAVE been a purchase that would make you a friend in the auctioneer.

So, you win an old trunk in an auction, find $1,000,000 in the lining and return it to the auctioneer? BS

Timmy has complained about this scenario, too. Those two donks conspired to shut him out.

Poor Timmy! The whole world is out to get him. And it's working.

Yes, you return it. That money may have been earmarked to save an orphanage, or some other good cause, and misplaced. You should do the right thing and return the money. people make mistakes, why take advantage of people. You didnt earn the money, you are not losing anything by returning it

Interesting. What if you bought a roll of circulated silver dimes, bidding on the basis of their melt value, and unwrapped them to discover that they were all 1916-D?

What if you bought that roll at the bank, for face value?

I'm trying to figure out if there are circumstances under which you feel that it is legitimate for someone to get more than his money's worth.

Not when children are involved. These orphans have suffered enough. People like you and Kentucky are so quick to take the spoon right out of their mouths.

You're pretending that Kentucky didn't immediately donate that money to a local orphanage himself.

Only he knows what happened. Kentucky should come clean on this forum and tell us. His reputation is on the line here.

    THE CHILDREN!

But not children of thieves, I guess.

Hey, wait! If Joan Langbord is claiming ownership of coins stolen by her father, but her father (and mother) are now both dead, doesn't that make her... an orphan?

Yes, this is out hero in his true glory. Funny how it's perfectly okay for HIM to screw someone out of their rightfully won item when it benefits him, but is just so wrong for someone else not to allow him to profit (beyond his $80 gift anyway) from an obvious mistake. Does anyone think our hero threw his buyer $80 for their troubles? Can we say "hypocrite"?

Now, if anyone wishes to do so, the link to Timmy's eBay thread on page #3 can be used to locate the very thread the above screenshots were taken from. Interestingly enough, it is titled "I'm in tears" (I am presently using a mobile devide, and am unable to copy and paste links to CT).
