The 5 is impossible to see. I'm looking at the 8, I think I see another 8 within, what do you think? Snow-1 or Snow-2?
I see dirt, but if you think it is sent it off. By the way I'm no FE expert, but I do like the doubling on the letters
It's the type of 1856 for sure. The repunched date on an S1 should be easy to see. I can't see it in the images but they are out of focus. My vote is S2.
It's already graded by pcgs as an au55 and I don't know if sending it in for conservation would be a good idea. I think it might actually go to a 53 if I had to have it regraded.
Don't know yet. They just updated the variety today. It just got transferred over from NCS this morning. Hopefully it'll be done sometime next week. Here's hoping to still grading and being top pop at NGC. The only other one at NGC was sold by Rick Snow on eBay for I want to say $1060/best in AU50 earlier this year.
Here's the entire coin prior to NCS service. I'll be sure to add one of it after when I get it back! Not really sure what to expect as far as NCS. I'm hoping the gunk is cleaned up and it has an overall cleaner look. Who knows, maybe they just removed enough to verify the variety although there's other markers outside of the 5(obviously) to tell it's an S-1. I'm excited to see it back in hand though. It was a tough choice sending it in, but I think it's going to look awesome when it comes back. NGC Population-1- Mine would be 2 PCGS Population-9 NGC: AU50 PCGS: VF20, the rest are MS. Total pop of 10, about to be 11, not too shabby.
I'm unsure what to think based on these pictures. It looks much "cleaner" than what it was prior to shipping it to NGC. It does appear that the gunk was removed from all the various places and not just at the date. I can't wait to see it in hand to see what the NCS did for it. I have a few other coins I wanted conserved and this will help me determine if I want to spend the money to do so. Graded the same. AU55 Top Pop at NGC.
