Hey Guys, Recently I've been trying to teach myself more on coin varieties. I figured it would be helpful to know all of your specialties (whether it be a series or "errors" or varieties etc) so that I would know who to ask for whatever I'm trying to learn. I've had a few experiences with asking people for help, they were very friendly even though I'm a little dense! So please post what you are most knowledgeable about below! Thanks, Jason
Bottom-feeding (looking for cheap stuff) Bargain-hunting (finding underpriced or unrecognized valuable coins) Self-deception (convincing myself that I've succeeded in the first two) Together, the three of them keep me happy in my hobby.
Been specializing in bust half dollars for the past 40+ years. Secondary specialty in other bust era silver.
Oh dear..... 1. Pre-Islamic Central Asia, including Sogdian, Kushan, and Hunnic coins 2. Coins of Christopher issued under Constantine VII 3. "Art Deco" coins of the tetrarchy 4. Late Byzantine coins of the 14&15th centuries 5. Ancient Chinese cash and spades 6. Ancient Persian 7. Interest Roman Egypt coins like coins of the Pharos. and whatever else strikes my fancy at the moment. When I was a US collector, it was SL and capped bust halves in XF-AU. I still have maybe 100 in the sdb, sitting there unseen for 15 years now.
I could say that my specialty is Morgan dollars, but that doesn't mean that I know more than anyone else. Like learning how to grade by looking at thousands of graded specimens, you learn how to identify who the more knowledgeable collectors are in any particular specialty by listening and observing. Chris
I'm curious on this... what puts these two terms together? Care to show a coin or two from that vintage? Thanks
Here is one I own. Sorry for the bad pic. "Art deco" is my phrase, but I love coins of this period that look like art deco paintings in their designs. Its a very fluid area that is not defined by anything other than my eye.
Scroll down about 3/4ths of the way to "VOGUE". Look familiar? http://www.bing.com/images/search?q...eco+pictures&qpvt=art+deco+pictures&FORM=IGRE I like the "Owl" too! Chris
Shall we say "extremely stylized"? In college, my Art History paper was "Art of the Arch of Constantine". Seems like there were a few theories as to why the contemporary sculptural art (not that salvaged from earlier emperors' works) was so different with childlike figures and such. Some thought that since it had been so long since Greek infuences, they had lost the expertise. Ridiculous - just the tastes of another era. Picasso and Rembrandt. Then too, remember the increasing Eastern influences. BTW, that's one great coin!
Forms of U.S. military payment from about the end of the Civil War to present. This includes tokens, chits, notes, AAFES POGs. I'm interested in forms prior to the Civil War but my knowledge and collection is limited.
My areas include pre-Taisho Japanese silver coins, US type coins, and coins and medals that depict coins, such as the Heisei - Osaka Castle medal shown.
Fondness more than specialty - Peace Dollars. I've got 2 full sets (Circulated and AU/BU) and am working on my NGC MS64 set which I hope to complete in the next year or two. Currently I have the 2nd place Date Set on NGC's registry site. It's complete, diligently working on the mint / date set now.
