Well that was unexpected!

Magnus Maximus Dulce et Decorum est....

    Hello again.
I had originally planned to get two coins this summer & autumn ( budget constraints), the Magnus Maximus Siliqua and a Valentinian II Siliqua.

Unfortunately this came along at a dirt cheap price and shot that plan down

    mDi8Q66wyHf34fGDR2XtxQE79soYJJ.jpg

    Constantius II AR Pre-reform Siliqua
    Constantinople mint
    Weight- 3.24 Grams
    Diameter-21mm
    Price- $126
I simply couldn't pass it up; 126 dead presidents for a dead Emperor is a very good deal!

Unfortunately the Valentinian II Siliqua is going to have to wait for another year :(

I thought I might as well post this here as I will be traveling for the next few days.
So please feel free to show off your Constantius II coins.:peeking:

Excellent coin at an excellent weight and for an excellent price. Valentinian II siliquae are overrated anyways :)

    Yes, yes they are.

I know that is a real tragedy, only $100!

    Thanks guys.
I still can't believe that price, the dealer must have picked it up for pennies on the dollar.

    Edit-Nice coins Mat and Jw!

Here's a coin from my earliest days of collecting, Phoenix on mound type, glossy black patina, probably waxed, very difficult to image. I should try again now that I have a better idea of what I'm doing.

These types are by no means as common as other coins of Constantius II, but for whatever reason, they're not in any great demand and therefore quite affordable.

Love that gloss. Always good to see these, those Fallen horsemen really get old after awhile.
JA, I don't think the coin is chipped at the top just struck on an odd flan. What do you think?

It's impossible to say from one pic, but I don't think it matters at all. Odd flan, chip, or clipping, it's a wonderful example of the type.

Yeah, you are right JA. I'll send the dealer an email though, always pays to be safe.

He may not have any more of an idea than I or anyone else would. When anomalies get in the way of an otherwise good coin, they become a problem. I don't think that's the case with your siliqua, but it's a matter of taste. You could always spend $450 on an almost perfectly round one. Zuzim's got one in his store at the moment.

    I agree JA. I am just curious:shame:

I saw that and wanted to puke. I love Zuzim, and have bought some of my finest coins from him, but that price is crazy.
