Impaired Kennedy half proof

Discussion in 'Coin Chat' started by Clad the Impaler, Jul 8, 2015.

  1. Hi everyone. I recently found an impaired/circulated 1973S clad proof Kennedy half dollar while roll searching. Is this worth anything over face value? Or should I just return it to the bank with my other clad change? Thanks.

I found a lot of them when I was actively searching the $500 boxes. They're not really worth much, but I saved them just the same. Who knows? Maybe one day some collector will decide to build a complete set of impaired proofs. We now have people collecting PO-1's so why not?

Not worth anything to most people. You can get a PF69UC example slabbed by PCGS/NGC for $11. ebay link here

Every so often, most of us have a chance to give a coin to a Kid; this would be a great piece with an object lesson built-in, that once upon a time it was a perfect proof, but with loss of its container and general mishandling, it got impaired (probably best to say "screwed up"), and is worth much less.

And you propose it as a space-filler until Kid finds a better example.

If Kid executes a Big Fail, and spends it, no great loss. You could also show Kid a plain BU of the same date, to emphasize the difference.

I've told this story before, When I was a Toll Collector at a bridge crossing the Hudson River Lots of customers would break up Proof sets and hand them to us. I use to have some Kennedy Proofs but I've sold them off. It is nice to find coins like that every once in a while.

I've yet to find a proof coin in circulation........if it were me I'd hang on to it for awhile, if for no other reason than to say 'looky what I found'.

Doug makes an excellent suggestion. :)

It didn't get impaired. It is impaired. Teach the kid the right terminology.

Nonsense. The day it was minted, it wasn't impaired. It GOT impaired when somebody did something stupid, like removing it from its protective container, first and foremost.
