Hi. This common silver coin of Austria is dated 1780. It represents Empress Maria Theresa and weighs 27.76 g. I knew that there were restrikes in the mid nineteenth century. Could you please propose your opinion about whether it's the original issue or anything else? Thank you.. Charles
According to brooche and shield I`d say its an obvious restrike. Might be from 1853 though. Type "thaler maria theresa" in Google, second result is the list of original and restrike variants/varieties, with photos.
It's Hafner 58, identified as being struck in Vienna from 1932-35. This type is pretty easy to spot due to the undersized planchet. Many of these varieties can be tricky and the documented origins of some are questionable. And yes it's worth melt, even if it was in much better condition.
