walked into the bank today, and showed them a few things. Then I asked if I could look through their money again, and they said, of course. I look through it and found 3 star notes, a BU 78 Lincoln cent, and a half dollar they had (Bicentennial, I think it is UNC, not sure) Also, they said they found a wheat penny for me, and I ask to see it and it is a 56 D wheat penny. I think it has been cleaned at some point at time, but hey, a wheat is a wheat, and I'm happy they saved it for me. Okay, then I get home, (had to go to the hospital, almost had a baby sister born, but false alarm lol) and dad puts his change on the counter, and I go "Can I look through it?" and you can guess the look he gave me like I was crazy and he said I guess. Good thing I did, I found a 48 wheat penny (can't believe he didn't notice it) a 74 S cent, and a canadian penny. So it wasn't a half bad day. Thanks for reading! Phoenix
Great finds Phoenix!! I found a $10 dollar star note in my wallet the other day. I must have got it in change somewhere.
Sounds like a fun day of coin hunting! You should start setting a few coins aside for that baby sister on the way. Never hurts to have another new collector! :smile
So you just walk into a bank and they let you look through their money? What kind of a place do you bank?
Wow, nice find! Makes you wonder how many hands it went thru before it got to you. Thanks. Lol, already ahead of ya. I have put a few things away for her, as my brother, and niece lol. You never know, they just might become coin collectors when they are older. And if not, it is a good investment for them. It is a long story, but this explains it. Thanks all! Phoenix
Obviously its made its way through alot of them because it looks well used, but, its still a star note, so it goes in my currency album.:smile
Great finds! -and- Congrats on the baby sister! I'm trying to get my little brother interested in coins...I gave him some nice uncirculated wheats and some silver quarters to get him started. He was quite interested for a while...but seems to have lost interest. Hopefully he'll come around...after all, he's only 7!
About star notes... First, what is special about them? Second, I come across ALOT of them EVERYDAY at work, I just pass over them because I have seen them pretty frequently, so wondering if I should keep them, Alot of fresh crips ones come through w/ Stars on them. They are the ones w/ a star at the end of the serial #?
I wouldn't hold them. Its like the guy holding crisp $2 bills since 1976, he might be able to get $2.50 now, if lucky !
AHh Thanks alot thats sorty why i don't bother w/ them since i saw soo many couldn't too much of a find. Thx again.
look in currency auctions and books.. Stars will (almost) always carry a higher preimuim then its non star cousin ... Stars represent only about 1/2% of all nots printed for a given district... you may see tons of them in your area, butthat just means the run gfot dumped at a local bank ... grab as many as you can, they will seel for a premium - and NOT like the 1976 $2
Makes you wonder how no one noticed it? Awesome find! What is the serial? Thanks! I am trying to get my younger brother more into it also, but don't want to push him. He likes finding wheats though. But I'll get him, little by little, lol. First off, they are harder to come by than regular notes. I think the estimate is for every 3 notes made, there is a star note I think. Also, they are sought after in UNC condition. Normally they will bring a premium. Go to ebay and type in star notes, and look at the prices a lot of them are going for. Also, they are just neat and fun to collect. Always neat to find a star note. I would personally keep some, and sell a few and see how you do. I think some in consecutive order and UNC, will bring close to $100 (the ones from Dallas I think). And why are they special? To some they are special, to some they are not. I like them, and will hold on to them. Always neat. :thumb: Lol, should have saved time in typing and just quote this, lol. Thanks all for input and replies! Phoenix
Sure a star note is better on an already colletable item, to me that doesn't make every circ star note worth saving. I'm not a paper money expert by any means, though. The test is to see if you can sell it to a dealer at a profit, not an ebay sucker.
Okay, true. I save all I can get, because I like them and want to collect them. I don't sell them. But a pretty good point, but I'll still hol on to mine. Thanks all for the replies! Phoenix
Look at it this way... if .5% of notes are stars ( one of every 200) that alone doesn't make them rare. You might run out of money holding them. Maybe limit it to holding only if CU or something ? At some point one must evaluate holdings for their potential to appreciate, that's why things like BU rolls of early 70's quarters and such are not common now, but the time-value of money made them a bad item to hold.
i keep all my star notes also. if you don't want to keep every single one, just see if its rare on the lookup.
I just di, and two of them are the regular red, about 320,000 made I think, so they are by the site rare. So that is neat. I keep them, because I like them, and if I am ever desperate for money to spend them, than I will. But that will be my choice. For now I will hold on to them. Thanks all for the replies! Phoenix
Phoenix: I get the idea you are a youngster,I'm old (43), trust me, you can't save everything forever, you'll learn that... look at Zane buying awesome stuff all the time, but selling much of it, in short time, then buying other stuff. That's the way to do it, instead of holding onto weak stuff like circ star notes. There is timing involved. You are too young to realise this, too enthusiastic, young, and bit with the coin-bug. Older guys like me and Zane ( I assume he isn't a teenager) need young collectors to enter the hobby. You have to be selective in what you save, and know when to sell ( and buy). There are countless examples of bad holdings: Modern proof sets, stuff like a 1968 proof set that was $5 in 1968 and still is ( approx) Junk silver held since the 60's that you didn't sell in 1980 $2 bills Ike dollars ( circ) Wheat cents hoarded since the 60's that's a start: Add rolls of state quarters... I'm sure Zane doesn't hold those I think star notes are in the same worthless category. Save them if you like, but ultimately ask yourself why you save them, most every coin collector has some motivation of increased prices in the future as a goal, certainly those fools saving rolls of quarters aren't collecting, they are speculating.
